Year 5 Update Wk 2

Essential Agreements – we finalised our classroom agreements this week.  In each class we discussed how we work best and how we can work our best as a class. The classroom contract was agreed upon by each class and we will try and stick to our agreement throughout the year.

PE – This week some of us had such fun learning ‘country’ dancing with Miss Claudia!

UOI

Central Idea:

Artists can use a process to express messages and ideas

Lines of Inquiry:

  1. The tools and techniques artists use (form)
  2. How messages are interpreted and conveyed (perspective)
  3. How art influences others (reflection)
Perspective Reflection Form
We will understand that artists draw on different experiences and thoughts when creating their work. We will understand that artists use a range and mix of artistic elements to express their ideas. We will understand that there are different elements of art which work together to create a work of art.
This week in UOI we looked at becoming more familiar with the Central Idea and have unscrambled it, really thought deeply about what each word meaning and used our visible thinking tools to help understand it.  We watched ‘The Dot’ as part of our unit provocation and discussed the importance of having a growth mindset when attempting to try any new art skills.

We also began familiarising ourselves with the 7 Elements of Art and had a go ourselves of trying these out.  What fun!

Number Maths
Central Idea – The base 10 place value system extends infinitely in two directions.
An inquiry into…
  • patterns and relationships of tenths and hundredths
  • the patterns of 6+ digit numbers and how they are represented

We began our Number Maths lessons this week and Mr Pheasant also started off his series of support Number lessons.  Each Monday, Tuesday and Friday our Number Maths lessons take place in the classroom and class teachers work with the mainstream children whilst Mr Pheasant takes a small group of children that we have identified need support for this unit of inquiry.  Mrs J, Ms Priya and Mrs Sanghvi also work very closely with the children in all classrooms to help support.  We focused on maths expectations and routines and begun teaching our place value concepts.

Strand Maths
Central Idea – manipulation of shape and space takes place for a particular purpose.
An inqury into….
  • creating, describing and visualising 2D & 3D shapes
  • transforming shapes
  • locating points on a grid
We also began our Strand Maths lessons this week…although we didn’t get through as much as we wanted due to the typhoon day.  We spend time pre-assessing the children on their Shape and Space knowledge – making various 2D shapes and representing them on paper was our initial focus.
This week in both Number and Strand we also spend lots of time working with the children on how to set up and and set out their maths books.  It is important that the children write one-digit-one-box and are taking care with their presentation of their work…as work that is not methodically set out can lead to errors.
Our focus genre for this UOI is…..DESCRIPTION
This week we looked a the Success Criteria for what makes a good piece of descriptive writing.  We will use that as a checklist when writing out own descriptions over the next few weeks.  We attempted our very first piece of descriptive writing in the format of a fast-write (a tool that encourages good ideas and vocabulary without getting too worried about handwriting and spelling).  We have also looked at some ‘great’ descriptions from famous authors and deconstructed them…..hopefully, to influence our own writing.

This week our Golden Book certificates were awarded to…

5C – Jannat Jabee

homelearning

  • Read the Weekly Update
  • Familiarise yourself with Reading Eggs again….keep working on it.
  • Mathletics – ‘Are You Ready’ tasks will be set soon
  • Reading – some children have been introduced to their Reading Journals so they can go ahead and get started but for the rest, Reading Journals will come home soon…..don’t forget to keep reading every night regardless.

House Colours Assembly : Friday 1st September – As Mr Harrison mentioned in last week’s Newsletter, we are aiming to develop the BHS House system this year. The first part of this involves Year 6 students who have a desire to be their House Team Captains presenting to the school in next Friday’s assembly. To make this a special event and to begin to develop a sense of belonging to the four houses, we would like all students to come dressed in their house colour next Friday 1st September. Any T-shirt, shirt etc of their house colour will be suitable – plain coloured shirts preferable, and not football shirts or similar.

Student Council Representative – Year 5 will be conducting Student Council Elections next week.  Any interested children need to let their class teacher know and should prepare a short speech/talk to present to the class next week.  Good luck all!

As the weather is extremely hot, please ensure your child has their cap in school everyday for outside play and PE.

The camp meeting due to be held on the 11th September has been cancelled for Year 5 and will now take place on the Tuesday 5th September. Please note that that the Year 3 Camp Meeting will go ahead on the 11th September as planned.

As part of our unit ‘How we Express Ourselves’ we will be going to Hong Kong Park on Tuesday the 7th September, weather permitting. The children will be exploring the park, gardens and museums for different examples of artwork and artistic techniques. We will be looking for parent volunteers to support this trip and if you are able to help please email your child’s teacher and let them know. The permission letter and all the info regarding this trip will come home via email….so please watch out for this soon!

Part of our unit of inquiry involves conducting artist studies.  As part of one of these studies, we will be doing some sculpting out of soap. In order to do these, we would like to request your child brings in their own bar of soap.
