Lo-Tech and Hi-Tech Making
This week in Year 4 we have been using their sewing skills to begin making a pencil bag. This will help to prepare them for further on in the unit when they will be designing their own “bag of the future”.
The bag of the future will have a micro:bit attached. This might mean that the bag could have a light sensor, temperature sensor or a step counter. The Year 4s have started to have a double I.C.T. lesson with Mr Lowe to support them with this process.
Maths
This week we have been continuing to explore probability by discussing the differences between independent and dependent events.
English
This week we have received a letter from an imaginary party planner, who is in charge of planning a Year 4 end of year party. The children have begun to write a response.
How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea
Technology Changes and Challenges the way we Express Ourselves
Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into…
- Creativity through technology (function)
- The growth of technology and its impacts (change)
- Using technology responsibly (responsibility)
Next week, students will continue to work with Mr Lowe on their micro:bit technology, will finish their pencil bags and will continuing discussing the impact of technology.
Central Idea:
Probability is based on chance and can be expressed in different ways.
Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into:
- Data from probability and how it can be collected, organised, displayed and analysed in different ways
- Different graph forms that highlight different aspects of probability more efficiently
Next week the students will look organise data into different charts. They can then use this to explore the difference between theoretical and experimental probability.
- Pick a bag at home and complete and use the Parts, Purposes and Complexities thinking routine to think more carefully about its design.
- You can pick any type of bag of your choice e.g. lunch bag, school bag, hand bag, sports bag, suitcase, etc.
- Draw a picture or take a photo and then label the different PARTS of the bag.
- Then think about the PURPOSE of each part.
- Finally, record the COMPLEXITIES, difficulties or questions you have about how the parts work.
Due date: Wednesday 6th June
Spelling
To support their reading development, please make sure of the following:
- Home reading should be fun not a chore.
- Keep the timing short, find a comfy, quiet space and have a chat about what your child is reading. This really helps to develop their comprehension skills.
- There is information about comprehension at the beginning of the journal, which you can use to help guide your discussion with your child. Please also refer to information your class teacher has sent out to you about how to help your child at home.
Mathematics
All children should aim to spend 30 minutes per week completing their assigned Mathletics tasks and/or practising their times tables.
Mandarin (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)
