Multiplication facts
Please help your children to practise their times tables at home as many of them still struggle to answer simple multiplication questions accurately. By the time students begin Year 5 they should know all multiplication facts up to 10×10 from memory. This will really help them to access the Year 5 Maths curriculum more easily!
Body Changes
As you will know, Year 4 watched a Body Changes video this week (Friday 18th) to explain changes that happen during puberty. Please check your email as we have sent you a list of the typical questions that arose during our follow-up discussions so that you know what the children were curious about. This will allow you to follow-up at home in the way you deem most appropriate for your family.
Year 6 Exhibition
We had the privilege of going to visit the Year 6’s PYP Exhibition this week. It was a really impressive culmination of all their learning throughout BHS and the students and teachers did a fabulous job. Hopefully the Year 4 students felt inspired about the opportunity they will have to do this themselves in two years time.
U.O.I. Stitching up a storm!
We have been learning to sew in Year 4 this week as part of new unit of inquiry into technology. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this and very keen on continuing with their stitching whenever possible. We have now learnt running stitch and back-stitch so we are ready to begin making bags next week!
Maths
As part of our measurement work in Maths, we have been taking each other’s temperatures and recording them in order to determine the typical body temperature range for our classes.
Some of us playing a fun game that allowed us to revise our multiplication facts (some of us really need to practise our times tables up to 10×10 before we enter Year 5 in August) and develop our understanding of probability. It was a variation of Bingo whereby the students had to consider how likely different numbers were to be called when decided which numbers to put into their Bingo grid.
English
We have been busy writing letters and learning about their features.
How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea
Technology Changes and Challenges the way we Express Ourselves
Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into…
- Creativity through technology (function)
- The growth of technology and its impacts (change)
- Using technology responsibly (responsibility)
Next week, students will continue to inquire into how written communication has evolved through the use and development of technology. We will be beginning to sew our small bags and introducing the concept of responsibility by beginning our Cyber Safety lessons, “Digital Passport” created by Common Sense Media.
Central Idea:
Probability is based on chance and can be expressed in different ways.
Lines of Inquiry
An inquiry into:
- Data from probability and how it can be collected, organised, displayed and analysed in different ways
- Different graph forms that highlight different aspects of probability more efficiently
Students will have the opportunity to play some games to develop their understanding of dependent and independent probability and the language associated with this.
Due date: Wednesday 23rd May
Spelling
To support their reading development, please make sure of the following:
- Home reading should be fun not a chore.
- Keep the timing short, find a comfy, quiet space and have a chat about what your child is reading. This really helps to develop their comprehension skills.
- There is information about comprehension at the beginning of the journal, which you can use to help guide your discussion with your child. Please also refer to information your class teacher has sent out to you about how to help your child at home.
Mathematics
All children should aim to spend 30 minutes per week completing their assigned Mathletics tasks and/or practising their times tables.
Mandarin (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)
