U.O.I.

This week the children have given peer feedback on their earthquake research. They have also moved on to to their own student-led inquiries. This is where the students are given the opportunity to choose and explore an area of Earth change that particularly interests them, such as tsunamis, floods, erosion, etc.

English

The students have been writing another explanation text with guidance from the teacher and their peers as well as self-assessing their work.

Maths

We have been extending our learning of fraction by applying our multiplication and division skills by working out the fraction of amounts (numbers). In addition we have moved on to make a connection between tenths as a fraction and tenths as a decimal fraction.

How the world works

Central Idea

Changes of the Earth impact the natural world.

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into…

  • How the different components of the Earth are interrelated (connection)
  • Why the Earth has changed and is continuing to change (change)
  • How we know the Earth has changed (reflection)

Next week students will begin researching their chosen Earth change in earnest. They will need to keep their research questions in mind and apply a range of comprehension strategies to locate, record and sort this information. They will then present their learning in a google slideshow.

Number Maths: Measure

Central Idea:

Events have attributes that can be measured using appropriate tools.

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into:

  • The selection and correct use of standard units
  • Solving real life situations using time, temperature, mass and capacity
  • Next week, the students will be moving on to probability and using the language of probability to describe the likelihood of events.

Next week the children will be estimating and measuring using a range of tools and standard measurements.

Writing to Explain
Next week the children will be applying all the language skills they have developed throughout this unit (causal connectives, technical, formal vocabulary, present tense and sequencing a process) to write their own unaided explanations.
Comprehension Strategy: Making Inferences/ Questioning
Next week students will continue to practise their inference skills with fiction and non-fiction texts. They will also be reviewing their questioning skills and generating ‘juicy’ questions that will further their learning and challenge their thinking for their personal inquiries.

Golden Book Certificates
Well done to the children who received Golden Book awards this week!
4F – Davey Lai, Bryce Wong, Edward Mauville and Hei Hei Cheung
4L – Christine Chiu
4W – Tianne Leung and Tao Lam

Year 4 Home Learning 16.05.18
We are sticking with the Home Learning routine from the beginning of the school year. Students will be given two themes and they may choose one to respond to. The new Home Learning choices have been explained to the children and they are already buzzing with creative and imaginative ideas! Here are a selection of ideas to use as a prompt if your child is struggling to get started.

Due date: Wednesday 2nd May

Spelling

The children have a list of words they need to learn. They should practise these at home in preparation for “buddy spelling tests” (the children testing each other) in class next week.

Reading
The children have been given their Home Reading Journals and are expected to read for 20 minutes per day at their given comprehension age. Children will record the title of their book in their journal. Please discuss your child’s reading and leave a comment in the journal so that they can change their book.
To support their reading development, please make sure of the following:
  • Home reading should be fun not a chore.
  • Keep the timing short, find a comfy, quiet space and have a chat about what your child is reading. This really helps to develop their comprehension skills.
  • There is information about comprehension at the beginning of the journal, which you can use to help guide your discussion with your child. Please also refer to information your class teacher has sent out to you about how to help your child at home.

Mathematics
All children should aim to spend 30 minutes per week completing their assigned Mathletics tasks and/or practising their times tables.

Mandarin (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)
