Memories of Beacon Hill

As you may, or may not, be aware, we are celebrating Beacon Hill’s 50th anniversary this year, including a special 50th celebration year book. If you are a past member of the Beacon Hill School community we would like to hear from you with any memories, suitable stories or simply any message to be included in the year book.

Please could you send your contribution to alumni@bhs.edu.hk. We would appreciate it if you could send the messages etc in by Friday 4th May. If possible, send us a photo of when you were at BHS!

Thanks in advance.

PYP Evaluation visit
We were extremely proud of the enthusiasm and effort the students demonstrated during our PYP evaluation visit earlier this week (as we always are, of course!). They all worked hard and talked knowledgeably about their learning.
Ukuleles!
Please encourage your child to remember to bring their ukuleles and ukulele booklets to school on the appropriate day. At the moment, we still have quite a few children forgetting their instruments.

U.O.I.

We have continued to undertake some guided research into the causes and effects of Earthquakes. Some students have used flowcharts to explain this process.

English

The students have been busy coming up with some Crazy Contraptions to help us complete jobs around school. They worked with a partner to come up with some very creative designs.

Maths

We have been applying our understanding of fractions of shapes to help us some solve some Peter Sullivan-style problems about cookies and fruit roll-ups!

How the world works

Central Idea

Changes of the Earth impact the natural world.

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into…

  • How the different components of the Earth are interrelated (connection)
  • Why the Earth has changed and is continuing to change (change)
  • How we know the Earth has changed (reflection)

Next week students will begin their personal inquiries into an Earth change of their choice in earnest. They will be formulating questions, identifying useful sources and beginning to make their notes.

Number Maths: Fractions

Central Idea

Fractions and decimals are ways of representing whole part relationships

Lines of Inquiry

An inquiry into:

  • Constructing and representing equal parts of a whole
  • Identifying, ordering and describing fractions using mathematical language
  • Understanding the relationship between fractions and decimals

Next week, students will be completing more rich tasks that look into fractions of quantities and equivalent fractions with related denominators. As this is our final week of fractions this year, we will be reviewing any tricky areas again to really boost the students’ understanding.

Writing to Explain
Students will be revisiting their Crazy Contraption (inspired by Wallace and Gromit) and creating a flowchart to explain the process. We will be identifying present-tense verbs and learning about choosing better causal conjunctions.
Comprehension Strategy: Making Inferences/ Questioning
Next week students will continue to practise their inference skills with fiction and non-fiction texts. They will also be reviewing their questioning skills and generating ‘juicy’ questions that will further their learning and challenge their thinking for their personal inquiries.

Golden Book Certificates
Well done to the children who received Golden Book awards this week!

Year 4 Home Learning 20.04.18
We are sticking with the Home Learning routine from the beginning of the school year. Students will be given two themes and they may choose one to respond to. The new Home Learning choices have been explained to the children and they are already buzzing with creative and imaginative ideas! Here are a selection of ideas to use as a prompt if your child is struggling to get started.

Due date: Wednesday 2nd May

Spelling

The children have a list of words they need to learn. They should practise these at home in preparation for “buddy spelling tests” (the children testing each other) in class next week.

Reading
The children have been given their Home Reading Journals and are expected to read for 20 minutes per day at their given comprehension age. Children will record the title of their book in their journal. Please discuss your child’s reading and leave a comment in the journal so that they can change their book.
To support their reading development, please make sure of the following:
  • Home reading should be fun not a chore.
  • Keep the timing short, find a comfy, quiet space and have a chat about what your child is reading. This really helps to develop their comprehension skills.
  • There is information about comprehension at the beginning of the journal, which you can use to help guide your discussion with your child. Please also refer to information your class teacher has sent out to you about how to help your child at home.

Mathematics
All children should aim to spend 30 minutes per week completing their assigned Mathletics tasks and/or practising their times tables.

Mandarin (All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.)
