This week, the children consolidated their learning in U.O.I. by thinking about the many inquiries they participated in and had a go at connecting ideas together and acknowledging new thinking.
In English, they have been learning to write a story in the style of Oliver Jeffers and really thought about how the words they choose can have an impact on the reader. This week they worked hard to publish their stories.
In Maths, the children wrapped up data-handling with a fun (chocolate-y!) rich task. This week they inquired into length, having a go at estimating and understanding why we use standard units of measurement.
The children also got to visit Y5 Market Day! Check out some photos from this week!
Central Idea:
The Interaction Between Body Systems Help us Keep Healthy and Survive
The children will be inquiring into:
How body systems work (function)
Interdependence and independence between body systems (connection)
The impact of lifestyle choices on the body systems (responsibility)
Next week, the children will tune into their new unit of inquiry by identifying familiar systems they come across in daily life and sharing what they already know about the human body. This unit will have a maker focus, so Mr Lowe will be spending more time with the children, developing the skills and knowledge needed for making/ representing a body system of their choice.
Central Idea:
Estimation Allows us to Measure with Different Levels of Accuracy
The children will be learning to:
-
- Identify standard unit used to measure length/ mass/ capacity
- How we measure objects with accuracy
- How we solve problems involving measurement
Next week, the children will continue to learn about length, how to measure using standard units and the conversion between these units. They will also be completing a variety of open-ended tasks to reinforce these ideas.
Next week the children will a variety of explanation texts in order to identify key features of this text type. They will also be using information reports and explanation texts to inquire into various body systems.
Reading
Comprehension Strategy: Determining Importance
Next week the children will learn to identify key pieces of information in texts and thinking about questions that comes to mind.
Congratulations to these students for being awarded a Golden Book Certificate this week!
