Action Week
Fundraising is in full swing for the BHS Action Week starting on Monday 25th September. There is an fun activity every lunch time which students can choose to participate in for a suggested donation of $20.
This will build up to a very special day on Friday 29th September we are calling ‘Colours Day’ where all children will take part in one of two sponsored events – either a sponsored Mini Monster March or a sponsored Readathon depending on their interest. There is also the much anticipated “Dunk The Teacher” on Friday. There is lots of excitement as students vote by making a donation for the teacher they want to be dunked in a bucket of iced water. We encourage all our students and their families to support this day of action to help in our drive to support those in our community who are in need. And of course, on Friday 29th all students should come dressed in their house colours.

This week was the Unit of Inquiry the children have been looking into the different ways people communicate. They have also continued to examine how the arts can be used as an effective way to communicate.
In Maths we looked into how to round numbers up and down to the nearest ten and hundred and started to examine 3D shapes.
In English the children have continued to focus on the reading comprehension strategy: Questioning. Our text type focus is recount and we have continued to look at features and write our own recounts.
Effective communication can be enhanced through different methods.

Dialogue in the Dark
We were very lucky to have Kitty and Eunice from Dialogue in the Dark come to share with us what it means to be a visually impaired person in Hong Kong. The students learnt about how they communicate, navigate the busy streets and read braille. As well as learning what they should do if they see a visually impaired person in need of help. They also got the opportunity to get many of their questions answered. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students and we encourage the community to support and visit them in Mei Foo.
People worldwide have access to rights and opportunities that can look different.
On Thursday we went to the Crossroads Foundation to introduce our new unity of inquiry. Students had the opportunity to learn what this charity does to help those less fortunate than themselves both in Hong Kong and overseas. They has a thought provoking activity on how it feels to have a lot, some or nothing in life. Ask your child about it.
This was the last week the children looked at learning about place value and shape. We will continue to look into how to round numbers up and down to the nearest ten and hundred.
Mathletics passwords are in your child’s diary. Please make sure that an adult supports your child when working through the place value activities. Well done to all those who have made a great start and especially to those who already have achieved certificates.
At school we often talk to the children about taking on challenges and working towards our own small goals in order to be able to make bigger achievements. This is a big part of our focus on Growth Mindset. If you would like to know more, please take a look at this book by Dr Carol Dweck, or catch one of her youtube videos or TED talks. Our Growth Mindset team will be putting a parent presentation on in October to explain further.
