BHS SCHOOL FAIR GOING GREEN
The Year 5s would like to thank you all for supporting their market day in school today.  There are a few items left that will be available, in the foyer, on mornings from next Tuesday, 20th March.  The 5s would like to invite all the children to come and buy some wonderful, handmade goods on their way into school in mornings whilst stocks last!
Remember this year we’re going green and trying to cut down on the waste produced, especially plastic plates, bowls, spoons and forks.  Please bring your own containers and eating utensils on the day.  For those unable to do so we will have disposable containers available for purchase. We would really appreciate all of Year 3’s support in helping to go green!

Scholastic International Book Club
Don’t forget to visit our unique BHS Scholastic website to browse and order from a great selection of well-known and good quality children’s books!
20% of everything you spend is ‘rewarded’ to the school to be spent on new books to support students’ learning.
Order deadline: Monday 23rd April

A reminder about raffle tickets, only  half the raffle tickets have been returned. Currently proceeds stand at $90,000,  less than 50% of our $200,000 target.  We really appreciate if you can return these as soon as possible.  Huge thank you to all those who have already returned. More tickets are available upon request.  Remember the top selling class in Y1-3 and Y4-6 will be awarded with a class event/outing.  Please ensure all tickets & monies are safe guarded and correct balances returned to BHS PTA as all numbered tickets & monies are Audited under requirements of the HK Lottery License.

Gabriel Chan, Marcus Su, Julien Leung (3S) and Felix Lee (3A) formed a BHS chess team and entered the The 9th Annual ISF Academy Chess Open. Each of the boys played 6 games against opponents from lots of different schools. 84 students from 28 different schools in Hong Kong entered the competition. Their team won the “fourth place team” in the “Lower Primary Section” on Sunday 11th March 2018. Well done Gabriel, Marcus, Julien and Felix for representing BHS and showing perseverance at the competition and coming 4th overall.

Year 5 Big Business

Thank you to the parents who helped support Year 5 Big Business. The children loved going round to all the Year 5 stalls and seeing all the creative ideas. No doubt your child will come home with lots of goodies from Big Business.

All profits from the market day will be donated to the Immanuel Kindergarten in South Sudan. This is a charity that Mrs. Quinn, one of our ex-staff members, has been involved in for a number of years.  It is a charity that we have supported in the past and would like to support again, especially in light of the extremely difficult situation that many find themselves in South Sudan.

Student Council Fruity Friday
Don’t forget to continue to support Fruity Friday. Please make sure your child has delicious and healthy snacks each Friday. Thank you to the parents who have been remembering about Fruity Fridays.

The children have begun to plan and some classes have completed their summative assessments for their unit on forces. They chose which experiment they wanted to investigate and decided on one variable. With guidance, they designed and carried out their investigations. They recorded their results using the scientific inquiry cycle.

In Maths, the students will continue with their ‘Peter Sullivan’ style multiplicative thinking. They will look at more problem solving and how they can record, justify and explain their thinking when working out their answers.

In English, we finished looking at the features of a procedural text and wrote up some of our own procedures. Students will continue to edit their work for punctuation and checking they have included all features of this text type.

Homes have been influenced by a variety of factors over time.

We will be inquiring into:

  1. What a home is (form)
  2. Why homes have changed over time (causation)
  3. How homes in Hong Kong (the local environment) have changed over time (change)

Next week, the children will take part in a provocation activity to get them thinking about their new unit. They will also be busy with China Day activities on Monday and Year 3 – 6 Sports Day on Thursday.

The children will be inquiring into:

  1. The roles of symbols and the language of multiplication  and division
  2. Mental and written strategies for multiplication and division
  3. The relationship between multiplication and division

Next week the children will continue to work through open ended tasks and practise their recall of multiplication facts. They will also continue with a previous unit; measurement and start to look at reading and writing the time.

Mathletics passwords are in your child’s diary. Please make sure that an adult supports your child when working through the activities.

We will also be looking at some new comprehension strategies that we will be developing during Reading times in class.

Year 3 will read books from Big Universe on a Monday and Friday. They will borrow home readers on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Well done to all the children who got the award this week!

homelearning

Students were told the next two themes for their Home Learning. Please encourage your child to choose the theme that interests them. They can decide to use one of the ideas listed or choose their own. Home learning is due in on Wednesday 21st March.

Please make sure your child has completed the Friday spellings at home and found and learned five new words.
Please make sure that they spend time at the weekend learning their five individualised words. In the back of their Spelling Journal is a list of words for the Unit. Students can learn these if they wish to challenge themselves. You could also use these words to discuss their meaning and put them into sentences together.

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.

Ms Lynn – Please read this week’s assigned book in Mandarin Matrix。

Ms Xu: 完成Google Classroom功课。 记得借书读书。
