Unit of Inquiry

The children have been finding out about primary and secondary sources. They have heard about places from a primary source and have also been a primary source themselves whilst explaining and drawing maps of where they live. The children have also been looking at secondary sources (atlases, websites) to find out about different places in the world.

They have also started to create a map and key of significant places in HK.

Maths

The children have been describing position and direction using mathematical vocabulary, for example, left, right, forwards, backwards. They have also created their own map with co-ordinates to locate features on the map. They have used compass directions to write directions for a partner to find places on their map.

The children have also spent some time this week in The Cloud with Mr Lowe. They were learning how to use an app to give directions for Dash the robot to follow.

English

The children have continued using their individual writing targets to help them improve their writing. They have been looking at the importance of layout when creating an information poster.

Reading sessions have also focused on determining importance around map reading. The children have noted how authors and book publishers make use of different features to signal importance e.g. bold font, subheadings, diagrams, etc.

Fun Friends

We have started to focus on the letter ‘I’ (I can try). In these sessions, the children will learn more about being brave and developing resilience. They have started to look at how to change red thoughts into green thoughts.  Find out more by using the username and password in your child’s Home School Diary to log into the Fun Friends online programme!

Central idea: Geography influences our experiences

Lines of inquiry

  • The significant features of places -form
  • How the features of a place influence our experiences -causation
  • The relationship of our location to other parts of the world – connection

Next week the children will identify, locate and describe the significant places around HK. They will create an information poster about HK.

Central Idea: Shapes are classified and named according to their properties

Lines of Inquiry

  • Sort, describe, construct and label familiar two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects in the environment using appropriate vocabulary
  • Identify and record examples of symmetry in the environment

Location: Next week the children will continue to use directional vocabulary to describe position and location. They will also be reviewing some key areas of maths such as place value, number bonds to 20 and beyond, etc.

All of the Year 2 classes have also spent some time on the Daily 10. This is a useful way to check and support your child’s mental maths skills. Different levels can be set. Please see the link below: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Hit the Button is another fun game that practises a range of different mental maths, including multiplication facts. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Writing focus: Writing to describe

Next week the children will explore the use of descriptive language in travel writing. They will look at lots of examples of rich language use.

Reading focus: Determining Importance

Next week the children will explore features and techniques used when creating travel postures and brochures. These include the use of vectors, colours and font styles to draw the readers eye to important parts of the text.

Spelling
There will be no more spelling lists this term.

Home Reading
Please read at home with your child each day and sign their Reading Journal. Please encourage your child to write the date and title in their Reading Journal, including for Big Universe.

In Big Universe, select ‘Library’. On the right-hand side you will be able to select the ‘grade’ for your child. The appropriate grade selection is kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade. This covers the age group of our children at BHS.

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.

Support your child’s understanding of Measurement even further at home with the following ideas.

  • Invite your child into the kitchen and have them help weighing and pouring out ingredients for baking.
  • Let them weigh themselves and other objects on the family scales.
  • Measure their height and help them measure the heights of other people in the family.
  • Engage them in discussions around estimation, for example, “I think the chair is about 10 hands high. What do you think?” or “I think this milk bottle holds more liquid than this can of coke. How can we find out?”
  • Let them play with measuring cups, jugs and spoons in the shower or bathtub.
