Memories of Beacon Hill

As you may, or may not, be aware, we are celebrating Beacon Hill’s 50th anniversary this year, including a special 50th celebration year book. If you are a past member of the Beacon Hill School community we would like to hear from you with any memories, suitable stories or simply any message to be included in the year book.

Please could you send your contribution to alumni@bhs.edu.hk. We would appreciate it if you could send the messages etc in by Friday 4th May. If possible, send us a photo of when you were at BHS!

Thanks in advance.

With the weather changing, it is very warm in the classroom. The children must wear top layers which they can remove to avoid feeling faint whilst working. All children must wear a BHS hat during breaks, lunch times and PE lessons.
BHS Dance Off 2018
The Year 2 Dance Off will take place on Monday 7th May during the lunch break.
  • The children can perform in groups or solo
  • The aim is to have fun
  • The dance should be around 1 minute
  • There will be a lower school and upper competition

You can support your child by helping them create and rehearse their dance.

BHS Clothes Drive

Thank you for supporting our Student Council’s action by taking part in their ‘Get Redressed Spring Clothing Drive 2018 ’ which ran from Monday 26th March to Friday 27th April.

For more information please visit the Redress website: https://www.redress.com.hk

Warmest wishes,

The Student Council

The children have continued to work in groups to create transport systems of their own.

The children have also been sorting 3D shapes according to their properties.

Information Literacy lessons have continued with Ms Jeves and the children were introduced to the MTR app on the iPads.

We have been looking at maps of Hong Kong to identify the locations of  Beacon Hill School and Discovery Bay, preparing to plan our journey on 8th May

Central idea

Transport systems are directly related to the needs of a community.

Lines of inquiry:

  • Features/parts of transportation systems (form)
  • Decisions involved in using transportation (function)
  • How elements of a transport system connect to meet the needs of a community (connection)

The children will plan how they intend to travel to Discovery Bay. They will look at maps of Hong Kong as well as using the MTR app on the ipads. They will also look at maps on Google Earth and relevant timetables. This will help the children with the choices they need to make. They will organise themselves into groups so they know who they will be travelling with.

The children will continue to create their vehicles using their designs to select the necessary junk materials, dowel, cardboard wheels and paints.

Central Idea:

Shapes are classified and named according to their properties

Lines of inquiry:

  • Naming 2D and 3D shapes
  • Classifying 2D and 3D shapes
  • Properties of 2D shapes (tessellation & symmetry)
  • The relationship between 2D and 3D shapes

The children will investigate symmetry through folding 2D shapes, sorting pictures and creating symmetrical patterns and pictures.

Please continue to practise number bonds to 10, 20, 30 and 40:

Our English focus is about grammar and sentence structure. We will be looking at the idea that good writers structure their sentences and choose their words carefully.
The children will be using their writing targets to focus on in class when writing. They will be writing sentences to show what they have found important in the non-fiction books. Their focus in reading is Determining Importance.
Please continue to read with your child at home and ask them to retell the story. Please encourage your child to write down the title of the text they choose from Big Universe.

Transport
Over the next few weeks, why not explore HK by travelling on different forms of transport. How many different forms of transport can you go on? Think about their cost, speed, comfort and any other interesting things about them.

Fun Friends

We have been looking at Relaxing today. Try to practise the strategies at home for 10 minutes a day, without any TV or screens on! You can encourage your child to use these strategies when they get upset or angry. Please also remind your child to be brave, looking people in eye, smiling and using a brave voice. More activities that you can do every day are on page 28 of the pupil book. Remember to look for the yellow stars!

 Spelling
Your child should learn the second list on the card.
Reading
Please be reminded that in Year 2, your child will not bring home a reading book on Tuesday or Thursday they will need to read on Big Universe. Children login and select ‘My Library’ from the top of the page. At the right hand side in the ‘Filters’ section they can select the ‘Grade Level’ of books. If the children select kindergarten, grade 1 and 2 this is the most appropriate reading age for them (5-8 years).

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.

The evaluation visit took place this week and the Year 2 children spoke confidently and politely when engaged in conversation with our two visitors. They left with the impression that BHS is a wonderful school with wonderful students! They will be finalising their report and sending it to I.B. for approval. This process takes 6 to 8 weeks.
