BHS Clothes Drive

The student council are pleased to be supporting a local environmental charity, Redress, by taking part in their ‘Get Redressed Spring Clothing Drive 2018 ’from Monday 26th March to Friday 27th April where we will be asking you to bring in your own unwanted clothing to benefit numerous local HK charities.

To make your contribution, please send your unwanted clothes into school with your child.  There will be a collection box in the school foyer

Redress is looking for good quality clothes, accessories and shoes – from high-end designer brands to high street fashion for women, men and children.*

Donations will be collected and carefully sorted by Redress for distribution to local HK charities. Top quality clothing will be sold to raise funds for Redress in a pop-up shop following the drive, whilst the clothes that cannot be used for the charity beneficiaries will be kept for Redress’ new circular economy initiative and ultimately recycled into new yarns!

Please support Redress’ work to cut waste out of fashion!

For more information please visit the Redress website: https://www.redress.com.hk

Warmest wishes,

The Student Council

The children have enjoyed comparing the capacity of different containers.

The children have also been practising their fine motor skills by creating different transport pictures with small beads.

The children have also been working in groups to create transport systems of their own.

The children have been reflecting on our trips that we took before the holidays

2A have been junk modelling to make a community

2D have been creating a story map for the story ‘Lost in Hong Kong’

Central idea

Transport systems are directly related to the needs of a community.

Lines of inquiry:

  • Features/parts of transportation systems (form)
  • Decisions involved in using transportation (function)
  • How elements of a transport system connect to meet the needs of a community (connection)

The children will be discussing the decisions people make when taking transport. They will be thinking about considerations people have regarding convenience, cost, speed and comfort.

The children will also be creating a form of transport out of recycled containers. The children will need to design and think about how they will create their vehicle.

Central Idea:

Shapes are classified and named according to their properties

Lines of inquiry:

  • Naming 2D and 3D shapes
  • Classifying 2D and 3D shapes
  • Properties of 2D shapes (tessellation & symmetry)
  • The relationship between 2D and 3D shapes

The children will be consolidating their knowledge of 2D shapes and their properties. They will be playing shape games and creating pictures using different 2D shapes.

They will also start to investigate the properties of 3D shapes. The children will go on a shape hunt around the school.

Please continue to practise number bonds to 10, 20, 30 and 40:

Our English focus is about grammar and sentence structure. We will be looking at the idea that good writers structure their sentences and choose their words carefully.
The children will be given some writing targets to focus on in class when writing.
Please continue to read with your child at home and ask them to retell the story. Please encourage your child to write down the title of the text they choose from Big Universe.
Well done to:

Transport
Over the next few weeks, why not explore HK by travelling on different forms of transport. How many different forms of transport can you go on? Think about their cost, speed, comfort and any other interesting things about them.

Fun Friends
THANK YOU to those parents who were able to attend the presentation concerning the programme on Tuesday! Your support with the follow-up activities is vital.
We have continued the fun friends program today. Please find the log in details for your child in their diary. The follow up homework for your children is on page 17 of the pupil book. Please look out for the yellow stars for suggestions of fun things to do.
Here is a summary of ideas:
1. This week, encourage your child to understand and name feelings –  one way you could do this is through reading stories and discussing how the character could be feeling.  Help them to identify what messages facial expressions and body language might be telling us about how a person is feeling.
2. Talk about things that your child could do when they have strong feelings such as feeling sad.  Perhaps they could talk to parents or a friends, cuddle their favourite toy, write a journal etc.
3. Random Acts of Kindness – challenge them to make a special effort to do one nice thing for someone else each day e.g. helping the adults at home set the table for dinner, giving their friend or sibling a hug etc.
4. Remind your child to be courageous – look people in the eye and smile when talking to them, use a brave voice and stand tall and have confidence to give things a go!
 Spelling
Your child has been given a new spelling card today.
Handwriting
The children have brought home a blue handwriting booklet. This is for them to finish at home in their own time. They do not need to be brought back to school.
Reading
Please be reminded that in Year 2, your child will not bring home a reading book on Tuesday or Thursday they will need to read on Big Universe. Children login and select ‘My Library’ from the top of the page. At the right hand side in the ‘Filters’ section they can select the ‘Grade Level’ of books. If the children select kindergarten, grade 1 and 2 this is the most appropriate reading age for them (5-8 years).

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
