Friday 23rd March – International Food Fair

Tuesday 27th March – 2K & 2D trip to Kowloon Tong MTR

Wednesday 28th March – 2A trip to Kowloon Tong MTR

Thursday 29th March – School finishes at 12pm for the Easter holidays

2K PE change of day
2K will now have their PE lesson on a Thursday. This means that the children in 2K will need to wear their PE kit to school on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
With the weather changing, it is very warm in the classroom. The children must wear top layers which they can remove to avoid feeling faint whilst working. All children must wear a BHS hat during breaks, lunch times and PE lessons.
BHS Dance Off 2018
Our BHS Dance Off has been postponed until after Easter.  Our student council will be sharing more information next week.  Important things to remember for the Dance off are:
  • To have fun
  • You perform in groups or solo
  • Your dance should be around 1 minute
  • heats for the competition will take place at various lunchtimes after Easter
  • there will be a lower school and upper competition

You can support your child by helping them create and rehearse their dance.

Scholastic International Book Club
Don’t forget to visit our unique BHS Scholastic website to browse and order from a great selection of well-known and good quality children’s books!
20% of everything you spend is ‘rewarded’ to the school to be spent on new books to support students’ learning.
Order deadline: Monday 23rd April

The children had a wonderful time at Sports Day. Thank you to the parents who came to support them. We hope you enjoyed it too.

As part of our scientific inquiry, the children were able to make rice krispie cakes to see what would happen to the chocolate throughout the process.

The children also continued to inquire into the different properties of materials by conducting experiments about melting.

The children have been using their hand spans to find out the length of different objects.

The Year 5s would like to thank you all for supporting their market day in school today.  There are a few items left that will be available, in the foyer, on mornings from next Tuesday, 20th March.  The 5s would like to invite all the children to come and buy some wonderful, handmade goods on their way into school in mornings whilst stocks last!

Central idea

Transport systems are directly related to the needs of a community.

Lines of inquiry:

  • Features/parts of transportation systems (form)
  • Decisions involved in using transportation (function)
  • How elements of a transport system connect to meet the needs of a community (connection)

The children will be going on journeys around HK. Each class will be split into 3 groups of 10. The groups will travel on the following types of transport:

  1. A school bus, a tram and a double decker bus, stopping at Victoria Park for lunch.
  2. A school bus, the Star Ferry and a double decker bus, stopping at Middle Road Playground for lunch.
  3. A double decker bus, the Star Ferry and a school bus, stopping at Tamar Park for lunch.

The children will feed back information about the different types of transport to the class and discuss the features of the transport.

Central Idea:

Measurement involves comparing, ordering and sequencing objects and events

Lines of inquiry:

  • Estimate and order the length of real objects using centimetres as a reference.
  • Estimate, measure and compare lengths of objects using centimetres with some accuracy.
  • Recognise objects that are longer/shorter than a metre.
  • Use body parts (e.g. hand spans, foot lengths, strides) and familiar objects (e.g. leaves, pop-sticks) repeatedly to match the length of things and say how many fit.

The children will be taking part in various learning experiences which will involve them:

  1. Estimating and using body parts to measure objects and spaces.
  2. Arranging lines of differing length in the correct order and measuring them accurately in cm.
  3. Problem solving activities based on measurements up to 1m.

Measurement activities are available on Mathletics.

Please continue to practise number bonds to 10, 20, 30 and 40:

Our English focus is narrative. We will work on this throughout the unit. The children will be creating their own version of the Three Little Wolves.  They will continue to be authors and illustrators for their own books.
Please continue to read with your child at home and ask them to retell the story. Please encourage your child to write down the title of the text they choose from Big Universe.

Spelling
Your child will be tested on the second list of spellings on Friday 23rd March.
Reading
Please be reminded that in Year 2, your child will not bring home a reading book on Tuesday or Thursday they will need to read on Big Universe. Children login and select ‘My Library’ from the top of the page. At the right hand side in the ‘Filters’ section they can select the ‘Grade Level’ of books. If the children select kindergarten, grade 1 and 2 this is the most appropriate reading age for them (5-8 years).

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
