BHS Dance Off 2018

Our BHS Dance Off has been postponed until after Easter.  Our student council will be sharing more information next week.  Important things to remember for the Dance off are:
  • To have fun
  • You perform in groups or solo
  • Your dance should be around 1 minute
  • heats for the competition will take place at various lunchtimes after Easter
  • there will be a lower school and upper competition

You can support your child by helping them create and rehearse their dance.

 Student Council Fruity Friday

The last term we surveyed our students to find out how we can make BHS even better.  A lot of students wanted Fruity Friday back.  This is an opportunity for you to help your child have delicious and healthy snacks at least once a week.  Can you please support and encourage your child to bring in a fruity snack each Friday.  We do not want processed snacks with fruit in them as they contain preservatives and man-made sugar.  Thank you in advance for your support.
Keeping our playground clean
During PTA bake sales, children buy cakes which are handed to them in a tissue. Unfortunately tissue cannot be recycled in Hong Kong and go to the landfills. Also, many children leave bits of cake and tissue on the floor as they do not have a container to eat from. It would be great if on bake sale days the children could please bring a reusable container to school to put the cake in while they eat it to stop the rubbish problem.

Central idea

People use and change materials to suit their needs

Lines of inquiry:

  1. The properties of materials (form)
  2. Materials are used for specific purposes (function)
  3. How materials can change  (change)

The children will continue to inquire into the different properties of materials by planning and carrying out some scientific investigations. They will be planing the investigations, making predictions, observing what happens and drawing conclusions.

The children will decide which materials are more suitable than others for certain jobs due to their properties.

This will be our last week of this unit of inquiry.

The link below has some activities that your child can complete about different materials. See ages 6-7 and 7-8.

Central Idea:

Measurement involves comparing, ordering and sequencing objects and events

Lines of inquiry:

  • Estimate and order the length of real objects using centimetres as a reference.
  • Estimate, measure and compare lengths of objects using centimetres with some accuracy.
  • Recognise objects that are longer/shorter than a metre.
  • Use body parts (e.g. hand spans, foot lengths, strides) and familiar objects (e.g. leaves, pop-sticks) repeatedly to match the length of things and say how many fit.

The children will be taking part in various learning experiences which will involve them:

  1. Estimating and using body parts to measure objects and spaces.
  2. Arranging lines of differing length in the correct order and measuring them accurately in cm.
  3. Problem solving activities based on measurements up to 1m.

Measurement activities are available on Mathletics.

Please continue to practise number bonds to 10, 20, 30 and 40:

Our English focus is narrative. We will work on this throughout the unit. The children will be creating their own version of the Three Little Wolves.  They will continue to be authors and illustrators for their own books.
The children will continue to learn how readers use the strategy of questioning before, during and after reading to make sense of the texts.
Please continue to read with your child at home and ask them to retell the story. Please encourage your child to write down the title of the text they choose from Big Universe.

Children login and select ‘My Library’ from the top of the page. At the right hand side in the ‘Filters’ section they can select the ‘Grade Level’ of books. If the children select kindergarten, grade 1 and 2 this is the most appropriate reading age for them (5-8 years).

Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.

World Maths Day is a free, fun, online competition with up to 4 million students world-wide participating. The competition measures speed in arithmetic and numeracy skills on our Live Mathletics platform and runs for 48 hours and is open to all schools around the world. Students compete online with other students and top scores are displayed on a live ‘Hall of Fame’.

Will BHS be the World Maths Day champion in 2018?

On Wednesday 7th March children will have the opportunity to take part in their Maths Lessons.  They will also be able to earn points until Thursday 8th March.  Encourage your child to have fun with Maths and take part at home.
