The children have been reflecting on the work they have been doing in Year 2 and preparing for the Student-led conference.
The children have enjoyed being a ‘scientist’. They have been thinking like a scientist by asking a question, making a hypothesis, observing experiments, recording their observations and drawing conclusions.
The children have been working hard in the library. They have been learning about the Dewey decimal system and how to order non-fiction books. They have also been trying to use alphabetical order to sort fiction books.
The children have been using Numicon to create pictures and practise writing multiplication in different ways. They have also been using the Numicon equipment to help solve word problems.
Central idea:
People use and change materials to suit their needs
Lines of inquiry:
- The properties of materials (form)
- Materials are used for specific purposes (function)
- How materials can change (change)
The children will continue to inquire into the different properties of materials by planning and carrying out some scientific investigations. They will be planing the investigations, making predictions, observing what happens and drawing conclusions.
The children will decide which materials are more suitable than others for certain jobs due to their properties.
The link below has some activities that your child can complete about different materials. See ages 6-7 and 7-8.

Central Idea: We collect and organise data to make sense of the world around us
Lines of inquiry:
- Gathering information
- Representing information
- Interpreting information
The children will be gathering and representing their results and observations from their Science experiments.
Central Idea: The operations of multiplication and division are related to each other
Lines of inquiry:
- How we solve problems using multiplication and division
- Mental and written strategies for multiplication and division
- The language and symbols of multiplication and division
The children will be consolidating their learning of multiplication and division by applying their understanding to solve real life word problems.
Remember to go onto Mathletics to complete the tasks your teacher has set and then continue to complete available tasks.
Please continue to practise number bonds to 10, 20, 30 and 40:
Mandarin – All children are encouraged to take a reading book home on the days when they have Mandarin lessons.
World Maths Day is a free, fun, online competition with up to 4 million students world-wide participating. The competition measures speed in arithmetic and numeracy skills on our Live Mathletics platform and runs for 48 hours and is open to all schools around the world. Students compete online with other students and top scores are displayed on a live ‘Hall of Fame’.
Will BHS be the World Maths Day champion in 2018?
On Wednesday 7th March children will have the opportunity to take part in their Maths Lessons. They will also be able to earn points until Thursday 8th March. Encourage your child to have fun with Maths and take part at home.
