Book Making This week the children in Year One has been busy making books about play.  The children carefully followed instructions on how to make a book with paper.  They then wrote and drew pictures about who, what and where they like to play.

Maths games  This week the children have been playing many number games to help their understanding of addition and subtraction.  Many of the games involve the children using dice, counters, cups and Numicon.  Children have also been singing number rhymes and finger plays that have animals or food added or taken away.

Parent-teacher conferences Thank you so much to all the parents who came to school for the Parent Teacher Conferences.  This was a fantastic opportunity for teachers to share with you how your children have been doing at school, as well as a chance for us to find out a little about your children at home.

The central idea for this unit is:  We connect with each other to create learning communities
The lines of inquiry for this unit are:
  • How we can get to know each other and ourselves (Connection)
  • Different types of learning and play (Form)
  • How to make our classroom a place for successful for learning (Function)

The week after the holiday our Who We Are unit will take an arts focus.  We will be looking at drawings by Keith Haring and thinking carefully about the messages in his art pieces.  The children will have a go at creating their own art models in the style of Keith Haring. The children will continue to think and reflect on what they are learning as they engage in these experiences.

Bake sales  Throughout the year at B.H.S there will be six bake sales in the playground.  These bake sales are organised by our P.T.A.  When there is a bake sale children are asked to bring in some money to buy baked goods at break time.  The first bake sale for this year will be the Year Six bake sale on Tuesday 30th October.  We suggest that children in Year One bring in no more than $20 as this is enough to buy one large cake or muffin, or two smaller biscuits.  Money should also be bought to school in a named purse or wallet.
Uniform   Many families have begun to order the winter uniform from the P.T.A office.  B.H.S is an older building and so therefore what often happens is that it can be cold outside in the playground and still very warm in the classroom.  In Year One we encourage the children to take a layer off when they come into the classroom and then put a layer on when they go outside into the cold.  If children are cold on P.E days there is a P.E jacket available that the children can wear.
House points  Each Monday during Golden Book assembly the house team with the most house points is given the house point trophy.  Throughout the week children can earn house points from adults in the school.  Please talk to your child about which house they are in and from time to time do check their points balance by looking at the B.H.S house point app.

maths

The focus for this unit will be for the children to be able to:

Recall addition facts for single-digit numbers and related subtraction facts

Solve simple addition and subtraction problems using concrete material (manipulatives)

Solve simple addition and subtraction problems using strategies including part/whole

Recognise patterns in the number system

After the half term holiday, we will finish up our unit on addition and subtraction.  The focus of this unit has been numbers that add together to make ten as well as their corresponding number facts.  We have been encouraging the children when adding numbers to start from the biggest number as well as think about the connection between addition and subtraction.  When learning about addition and subtraction we have been using vocabulary such as minus, take away, subtraction, addition, adding, altogether.

Mathletics:

Please help the children to complete the Mathletics tasks that have been assigned to your child. The children can also enjoy Maths Live and play other children live across the world.

After the holidays in reading, we will be continuing to focus on the skill of retelling.  At home please use the hand out that was passed you to at the Parent Teacher Consultation about the ‘five finger retell.  We use this model in class to support the children with their retelling skills.
In writing the children will continue with the books that they have been making about their play.  Please ask your child how to make a three-page book using paper.   We found that the A3 sized paper seemed to be the best size to use.
Unit 2 Phonics:
Our phonemes for this unit are:
r,l,d,b, f, h, i, u
Our camera words for this unit are:
day, of, a, he, today, for
Please support your children in learning to read and write the camera words from unit 1 and unit 2.  Today the unit 2 bookmark went home in your child’s home school diary.  Please use this to support your child’s understanding of letter sounds.  There are some ideas of games to play with your child at home.

Congratulations to the children who received a Golden Book certificate this week.

Make – Do

After half term each Year One class will have a making session with Mr Lowe using the Make-Do equipment.  When using Make-Do the children create with large pieces of cardboard and plastic saws, screwdrivers and bolts.  Creations do not go home so the children will learn about making and dismantling.

A half term project at home could be:  Find an old box or two and get busy making.  Use scissors, tape, glue and small pieces of paper or material to attach to the box to make parts.

Here is a clip from youtube to inspire making at home.

Happy being creative during the half term holiday!
