Year 1 Update – Week 34
How the World Works
Central Idea: People explore the properties of materials to help them design and make.
Next week we will continue to explore different materials. The focus will be the uses of different materials. The children will explore and find out more about why some material are used for different purposes.
Next week, we will be listening carefully to the questions that the children ask during their inquiries.
Next week we will continue with our data handling unit. This unit looks at exploring ways of collecting and organising data. In Year 1 the focus is on pictograph and bar charts. We will be using our questioning skills to gather information about classmates and looking at ways to tally and record responses in simple tables.
Mathletics: – There are now some more activities open. Please enjoy supporting your child with these tasks. If your child is not yet logging onto Mathletics independently please support them to do so.
Please help the children to complete the Mathletics tasks that have been assigned to your child. The children can also enjoy Maths Live and play other children live across the world.
Next week we will continue looking at non-fiction books connected to our unit of inquiry and begin to practise reading for information and deciding which are the important parts of the text.
Our work on scientific language will continue as children practise using the new vocabulary to complete some descriptive writing.
Next week during writing sessions we will be focusing on using the word because in a sentence. An example of this is “Wood is used to make a table because it is strong and will last a long time.”
Unit 6 Phonics: Next week our final phonics unit will begin.

A message from Mr Hoskins – our environmental coordinator:
Dear Parents,
Non-profit organisation EcoDrive has teamed up with The New Youth Energy Think Tank in what promises to be the biggest green campaign Hong Kong has ever seen.
In the lead up to May 30, 2019, Hong Kong’s first ever No Single-Use Plastic Awareness Day. EcoDrive and The New Youth Energy Think Tank have launched the “Enough Plastic” campaign in order to tackle the growing issue of single-use plastic, which plays a huge part in polluting our planet.
As EcoDrive co-founder Emily Lam-Ho said: “It takes 20 days to break a habit, so here’s to hoping that by the end of our campaign, you will have cut out some form of plastic.”
Please take 1 minute to watch the Enough Plastic Campaign Video.
We would love if you could support this campaign next Thursday 30th May 2019 and help make sure that your child has a plastic-free snack and lunch.
