Shared Area
Christmas has arrived in the Year One and Two shared area! The children have thoroughly enjoyed decorating the Christmas Tree, making their own Christmas cards and writing letters to Santa in the Christmas Post Office.
Over the next two weeks, we will be setting up play experiences in the shared area that invite the children to engage in Christmas role play, practice fine motor skills by making snowflakes and wrapping presents and use their creative skills by designing their own wrapping paper. We will also be encouraging the children’s writing skills by continuing to write letters to Santa and making and sending festive cards,
How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea: Thinking helps us to imagine and create.
This week the Year One children have been exploring the concepts of imaginary and real through books, discussions and practical activities. They also continued to use the thinking tool “Would You Rather” to make choices, verbalise these to others and justify their choices. We encouraged the children to use the sentence starter, “I would rather…….because……”.
Next week we will be introducing a new thinking tool called “Step Inside”. This strategy encourages the children to think about the concept of perspective. They will be exploring different pieces of imaginative artwork and asked to imagine they are inside the picture and think about what they see, what they hear and what they feel. Teachers will model the use of this tool and the children will then have opportunities to use the strategy themselves.
Junk Modelling Materials
This week the children have really enjoyed using their imagination and creative skills to create their own models using recycled junk materials. Please continue to send in any items that the children may be able to use for this purpose.
Examples of the sorts of items you could send in with your child:
- egg cartons
- plastic bottles
- cardboard packaging
- plastic packaging
- empty kitchen roll
- empty cereal boxes
Many thanks.
Christmas Cards
The festive period is upon us and it is nice for the children to send each other Christmas cards. If they do wish to write and send cards to their friends, please ensure that they write the child’s name and class on the envelope. We will encourage the children to post their cards in the school Christmas post box and each day the Year 6 monitors will empty the box and deliver the cards to each class.

Reading – Visualising
This week we have continued to focus on the comprehension skill of visualising. The children have had the opportunity to develop this skill by listening to and reading passages that they have then tried to picture in their heads. They have been encouraged to record their visualisations using pictures and describe their images to others.
