This week has been a busy week in Year 1 with our first school trip to Wise Kids. Last week the children made a plan for what they would like to play with and who they would like to connect with during their visit. It was so nice to see the children exploring a variety of different types of play and to see the children playing with their new BHS friends. After our visit to Wise Kids we encouraged the children to reflect on their experience by thinking about the activities that they enjoyed, the people who they interacted with and the green choices that they made when they were playing. We were very impressed by the way in which the children shared with one another, took turns during games and asked each other to play.
During UOI rotations, we have been providing different messy play experiences. Last week the children explored water spheres that tripled in size and this week we made a gloop mixture out of cornflour and water. Messy play is an important part of sensory exploration and allows the children to mould and manipulate materials. It also allows them to solve problems, be creative and overcome fears relating to getting messy or dirty. We have included a simple recipe for gloop at the bottom of this weekly update and we would love to see photographs of the children engaging in messy play at home. Please send any photos in to your child’s class teacher.

Central Idea:
Relationships develop through play and connecting with others.
As well as our trip to Wise KIds, this week the children have been discussing what they have learnt throughout this unit. We have been very impressed by the way in which the children have learnt how to initiate play, the green choices that they can make with their friends and how to use their words to solve problems as they occur when they are playing. Throughout the unit, the children have also been learning the importance of sharing and taking turns.
Next week we will be starting our second Unit of Inquiry.
The Central Idea is:
Individuals contribute to the way communities function

We will be tuning the children into this unit by encouraging the children to inquire into the roles and responsibilities within our school community. They will be building upon the questioning work that Ms Jeves has done with them by formulating who, what, when, why, where, how questions that they would like to ask people within the BHS community.

A reminder that next week is BHS Colours Week and that next Friday 29th September is Colours Day.

As part of our 50th celebrations we are aiming to give back to our community by holding an Action Day on the 8th December in partnership with Bethune House, Sunshine Action, Sai Kung Stray Dogs and Soap Cycling. On the 8th December each year group will have the opportunity to help make food parcels to help those who are in need in Hong Kong. More details will follow about that day as we get closer to it.  We are aiming high and the amount of money we need to raise equates to $250 per child.

To kick-start our fundraising, we are going to have 4 days of lunchtime activities where children can make a minimum donation of HK$20 to join in fun events such as karaoke. This will build up to a very special day on Friday 29th September we are calling ‘Colours Day’ where all children will take part in one of two sponsored events – either a sponsored walk/run or a sponsored readathon depending on their interest.  Each year group will have half an hour for the events. Sponsor forms can be downloaded and printed off from today’s Newsletter. We encourage all our students and their families to support this day of action to help in our drive to support those in our community who are in need. And of course, on Friday 29th all students should come dressed in their house colours.

 Parent Teacher Consultations
Next week we have our first Parent Teacher Consultations on Tuesday 26th and Thursday 28th September. This is an opportunity for you to find out how your child has settled into Year 1 over the past half term. Your child does not need to attend this meeting. We look forward to seeing you all next week.

maths

This week the children have been finishing their inquiry into the properties of 2D shapes and they have been exploring the vocabulary of corners, edges, sides and equal aswell as learning some new shape names such as, pentagon and rhombus.

Central Idea: Numbers can be added and subtracted

Next week in Maths we will be starting a new unit based on addition and subtraction. The children will explore different practical activities and games based on number bonds to10. These are otherwise known as fact families or “Friends of 10”.

0 + 10 =10,  1 + 9 = 10,  2 + 8 = 10,  3 + 7 = 10,  4 + 6 = 10, 5 + 5 = 10,  6 + 4 = 10,  7 + 3 = 10,  8 + 2 = 10, 9 + 1 = 10

We will also be developing the children’s understanding of 1 more than and 1 less than using numbers up to 100.

Mathletics: Please spend some time each week exploring the different activities that we have set for the children. As we are starting a new Maths unit, we will open up more tasks linked to addition and subtraction this week. Under the ‘play’ section, children can practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world.  It is not intended that the children will do these tasks totally independently so please help your child to become familiar with the layout of Mathletics and how to go about completing the tasks. Have fun!

This week the children have continued to learn about different types of writing by creating thank you cards for their buddies or for their parents to thank them for coming to the Play Workshop. At this early stage in the year we are keen to see the children just “having a go” at writing by using their phonic knowledge, word knowledge and by using prompts and vocabulary around the classroom to help them. It is very important at this age that the children see that their writing is valued and that they see themselves as writer’s, therefore we are not looking for perfect pieces of writing just the children trying their best!
Next week in English, our reading comprehension focus will be retelling and we will give you some tips on how you can help with this at home at the Parent Consultations. In Writer’s Workshop we will continue to learn about different ways to socialise by writing questions that can be used to interview a friend.
Phonics
We will continue to teach and practise the first set of phonemes and camera words. You will have received the unit one bookmark outlining the phonemes and camera words that we will be covering and some games that you can try at home with your child.
Phonemes:   s m c t g p a o
Camera Words:  to     are     she     I      the     was
Not all words can be decoded phonetically. We call these tricky words, ‘camera words’ because children must learn them as though they were taking a photo of the word with their ‘mind’s eye’. They are encouraged to memorise the part of the word which is tricky.

Congratulations to the following children for their Golden Book certificate on Monday.

1W – Hobert Yau

1P – Annabelle Young

1L – Tristen Tang

Messy Play

As mentioned above, messy play is a very important play experience for young children to have. We have come up with a few suggestions that you could try at home. Please send us in any photos of you and your children having fun and being messy at home.

  • Gloop (See recipe below)
  • Playdough
  • Shaving foam
  • Slime
  • Bubbles
  • Sand play
  • Water play
  • Soil and digging
  • Plasticine
  • Clay

Here is a simple recipe that you can use to make gloop at home.

You will need:

2 cups of flour

1 cup of water

Food colouring

  1. Place the cornflour into a large container and add a few drops of food colouring.
  2. Let your child pour the water into the centre of the mixture.
  3. Allow your child to mix the water into the cornflour with their hands. Allow them to play with it before it is totally mixed together. Ask them how it feels.
  4. Have fun together!
