Year 1 Update – Wk 34
At the start of the week, we were treated to the finals of the BHS dance off. The children loved seeing fellow students performing and were a really supportive and excited audience.
This week we have continued inquiring into the different seasons and trying hard to understand how the Earth’s movements in space are connected to this. We have discussed different clothing and equipment needed for the the different seasons and some of us have enjoyed finding out about animal migration and hibernation. We have also been looking at ways of presenting information and begun building and drawing different charts and graphs.
Lines of inquiry
The Earth changes (form)
How the Earth’s changes affect our lives (change)
How the Earth’s changes other living things (change)
Over the next week the students will be making plans for an imaginary trip. They will be selecting places and seasons and then thinking about all the things they will need to take with them. They will be given the freedom to choose how they will present their thinking so we are looking forward to seeing the range of ideas they come up with.
Data Handling
Central Idea: We collect information to make sense of the world around us and can be organised in different ways.
Next week we will be exploring the concept of probability and through practical games and real life contexts we will be learning the language associated with probability, such as; “will happen”. “won’t happen” and “might happen”.
The children will also be using the data they have collected through our weather watch to construct and analyse simple bar charts and pictograms.
Mathletics
As we approach the end of the year please support your child in completing the remaining Mathletics tasks that have been set for them.
Under the ‘play’ section, the children can also practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world.
Please support your child in learning how to log in using their user name and password rather than relying on an adult to do so for them. At school we are teaching the children to be independent with this skill.
