Year 1 Update – Wk 30
Sharing Unit
Following on from our sharing day last Friday the children have spent some time this week reflecting on what they learnt during the unit, how they had been courageous and reflective over the past six weeks and what they enjoyed from the actual sharing day and the unit as a whole.
Unit 6
This week we have started our final unit for this year and the children have been tuning into the unit by looking at what they know about changes to the Earth, looking at globes and atlases and watching videos about different Earth changes.
Lines of inquiry
- The Earth changes (form)
- How the Earth’s changes affect our lives (change)
- How the Earth’s changes other living things (change)
Central Idea:
Numbers can be used in many ways for different purposes in the real world
Next week we will be revisiting our work on place value and the children will be engaging in practical activities allowing them to model, read, write and order 2 digit numbers. It is important that the children have a firm foundation in how the number system works and the value of the numbers they are working with. We will be revisiting vocabulary linked to place value such as, hundreds, tens, units, digit.
Data Handling
Throughout this unit, we will also be applying our learning from our unit of inquiry by collecting and recording weather data. The children will also be exploring ways of displaying data by using pictograms, tally charts and bar charts.
Mathletics
Please spend some time each week exploring the different activities that we have set for the children. Under the ‘play’ section, children can practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world. It is not intended that the children will do these tasks totally independently so please help your child to become familiar with the layout of Mathletics and how to go about completing the tasks.
Please support your child in learning how to log in using their user name and password rather than relying on an adult to do so for them. At school we are teaching the children to be independent with this skill.
Writing
Next week we will be begin to explore non-fiction texts which explain natural Earth changes. The children will look at different diagrams in non-fiction books and will have a go at drawing and labeling their own diagrams.
Reading Next week in reading we will continue to focus on the comprehension strategy of questioning. Good readers ask questions before, after and during reading. Next week as children read we will encourage them to ask questions and then find out the answers as they read or are read to. We will explore whether all questions can be answered and exploring why some of their questions may not be answered.

Well done to our Golden Book certificate children!
There is a new outdoor playground on Hong Kong Island offering kids an opportunity to play, climb, and slide by the sea. Please see the details below from Little Steps Asia.
Located just 10 minutes walking distance from HKU MTR station (Exit B1), this new playground in Shek Tong Tsui has a nautical and transport theme and is located right by the ocean (and Instagram Pier for those looking for an extra photo)! Kids will love exploring the pirate ship and watching the ships cruise in and out of the harbour. There is shade on offer and toilets around the corner for an easy breezy outing.
Want more? Jump on a tram (the Witty tram station is around the corner), explore the pier, or run around trendy Kennedy Town.
See you there!
