Year 1 Update – Wk 27
UOI Group Inquiry
The children have started working on a group inquiry into an aspect of life in the past that they are interested in. The children have demonstrated an interest in many aspects of history including transport, old toys, entertainment in the past, buildings and life at BHS over the years. This week they have met with their group and started thinking about their wonderings and questions for research. In the coming weeks, they will work as a group with their teachers to inquire into their questions and use evidence such as photos, videos and written sources of information to find out how life has changed. All of the groups have shown a great deal of enthusiasm about their area of interest and are looking forward to the next stage in our inquiry cycle. Please take some time over the next week to ask your child what they are inquiring into and what questions they have about their area of interest.
Music
As part of our sharing unit, Mr Gibson has been working with each class on some music compositions and songs that they are going to share with you on the 11th May during our Year One sharing morning. This week they have brought home two sheets that Mr Gibson would like them to use for practise at home. Please see the message below from Mr Gibson.
As you may, or may not, be aware, we are celebrating Beacon Hill’s 50th anniversary this year, including a special 50th celebration year book. If you are a past member of the Beacon Hill School community we would like to hear from you with any memories, suitable stories or simply any message to be included in the year book.
Please could you send your contribution to alumni@bhs.edu.hk. We would appreciate it if you could send the messages etc in by Friday 4th May. If possible, send us a photo of when you were at BHS!
Thanks in advance.
Objects and numbers can be divided into equal parts and groups
Next week in maths we will be starting our new maths unit based on fractions. The children will begin the unit by exploring some of the vocabulary of fractions such as, equal, half, quarter, whole. They will also be inquiring into shapes and how they can be divided into equal parts.
Mathletics
Please spend some time each week exploring the different activities that we have set for the children. Under the ‘play’ section, children can practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world. It is not intended that the children will do these tasks totally independently so please help your child to become familiar with the layout of Mathletics and how to go about completing the tasks.
Please support your child in learning how to log in using their user name and password rather than relying on an adult to do so for them. At school we are teaching the children to be independent with this skill.
Writing
During Writer’s Workshop the children will be continuing to work on their personal timelines by adding text to go with their photographs. They will be attempting to use past tense verbs and write in the first person as they write their sentences.
Reading
Next week our reading focus on inference continues. We will be encouraging the children to apply what they have learnt about inference to their own reading when they are using their book stacks in Reader’s Workshop. The children will also be accessing different types of written and visual texts when they are researching for their group inquiries into an aspect of life in the past.

2) Helps lay down healthy bones. Your skeleton grows stronger if you do regular weight-bearing exercise. An activity like skipping that puts stress on the bone is recommended for children as it helps to stimulate optimum bone mass in developing bodies.
3) Improves and prepares muscles for other sports. Whatever sport you play or want to become good at, skipping will help. Many top athletes use skipping as part of there training to develop fitness levels and explosive speed. 4) Brain gym. Skipping helps with many aspects of cognitive ability including those which will help with sport, movement and rhythm, and problem solving.
5) Concentration. Studies have shown that regular exercise improves concentration levels. Further more a short five minute blast with a skipping rope will increase blood flow to the brain which is your bodies way of ‘putting on your thinking cap’!
6) Teamwork. With the team games available like long rope games and double dutch games and also partner skipping you will have to work together to succeed.
