Year 1 Update – Wk 25
Such a busy week!!! It must nearly be the holidays.
The week started with the children arriving in all their amazing outfits. They were so excited to show all their friends and teachers what they were wearing and talked enthusiastically about where they had got them from. Everyone had a great time taking part in all the different activities from fan painting and ink writing to traditional tea drinking. Please click HERE for lots of photos taken during the day.
This week the children have also had their first dance lesson with a visiting teacher. They began to explore how string puppets move and how they could also move their own bodies in this way. Over the coming weeks they will start to create a dance which will be shared with you on Friday 11th May as part of our sharing day.
Sarah Brennan visits Beacon Hill
This week the children enjoyed a visit from Sarah Brennan, an Australian author who has lived in Hong Kong for many years. Sarah entertained the children with her latest story featuring the animals from the Chinese zodiac, The Tale of Desmond Dog. The story which is illustrated by Harry Harrison, tells of a brave dog and his struggles against the pirate queen Ching Shih. The end of the book tells a little of the history of this period of Hong Kong and Chinese history. You child will have brought home an order form on Wednesday and if they want to buy their own copy of one of Sarah’s books they need to bring it back to school before Wednesday 28th. Sarah will sign the book for your child so please ensure you write down their name clearly on the form.
Thursday was Trashion Fashion, where we saw so many wonderful creations by the fashion stylists of the future.
Finally our week was rounded off with the excellent assembly by 1W. They confidently shared their learning, singing, dancing and acting with us through their version of the great Kapok tree. Well done 1W.
BHS Clothes DriveThe student council are pleased to be supporting a local environmental charity, Redress, by taking part in their ‘Get Redressed Spring Clothing Drive 2018 ’from Monday 26th March to Friday 27th April where we will be asking you to bring in your own unwanted clothing to benefit numerous local HK charities.
To make your contribution, please send your unwanted clothes into school with your child. There will be a collection box in the school foyer
Redress is looking for good quality clothes, accessories and shoes – from high-end designer brands to high street fashion for women, men and children.*
Donations will be collected and carefully sorted by Redress for distribution to local HK charities. Top quality clothing will be sold to raise funds for Redress in a pop-up shop following the drive, whilst the clothes that cannot be used for the charity beneficiaries will be kept for Redress’ new circular economy initiative and ultimately recycled into new yarns!
Please support Redress’ work to cut waste out of fashion!
For more information please visit the Redress website: https://www.redress.com.hk
Warmest wishes,
The Student Council
Next week we will start exploring patterns using a mixture of shapes, objects and numbers. We will look at which parts repeat and how we can extend them.
We will continue counting forwards and backwards in differing amounts to help with our mental addition and subtraction skills.
Mathletics
Please spend some time each week exploring the different activities that we have set for the children. Under the ‘play’ section, children can practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world. It is not intended that the children will do these tasks totally independently so please help your child to become familiar with the layout of Mathletics and how to go about completing the tasks.
Please support your child in learning how to log in using their user name and password rather than relying on an adult to do so for them. At school we are teaching the children to be independent with this skill.
We will start to look at ways other people have recorded personal histories and important events.
Inference will remain our comprehension focus as children explore the actions and feelings of characters. We will be looking for clues in the words and pictures so we can make deeper meaning as we read.
There was no golden book this week.
