Year 1 Update – Wk 24
Monday 19th March China Day (rescheduled from before the school closure) Children should come to school dressed in traditional Chinese clothes.
On Tuesday, the Year 1 and 2 children enjoyed the annual sports day at Kings Park. It was lovely to see the children participating fully in all of the sports rotations and running races. The teachers were impressed with how courageous the children were when approaching new activities that they had not done before and were pleased with the the team spirit that we saw throughout the morning. Thank you to all the parents who came along to support and encourage the children.
50th Anniversary Fortnight
In celebration of Beacon Hill’s 50th Anniversary the children have been participating in a variety of lunchtime activities linked to maths, reading and the environment. On Monday some of the Year 1 children enjoyed an exciting game of bingo and on Wednesday a maths quiz was held which several of the children attended. Throughout the week, the children have also been spending their lunchtimes engaged in picture hunts based upon The Hungry Caterpillar, book characters and endangered animals. In Mr Teahan’s lessons, all of the Year 1 classes have been working in teams to complete 50 laps of the playground. It has been wonderful to see so many children engaging in all of the activities.
Next week the celebrations will continue with a Trashion Fashion competition where the children are invited to design and create a fashion item out of recycled materials. If your child would like to take part please help them at home and send their costume to school on Thursday. On Tuesday the children will have the opportunity to take part in the BHS book quiz. We will help the children to sign up for this.
The Year 5s would like to thank you all for supporting their market day in school today. There are a few items left that will be available, in the foyer, on mornings from next Tuesday, 20th March. The 5s would like to invite all the children to come and buy some wonderful, handmade goods on their way into school in mornings whilst stocks last!
Next week the children will complete their inquiry into the relationship between addition and subtraction. They will be reinforcing the addition and subtraction strategies that they have learnt so far and developing their understanding further through practical application of addition and subtraction problems. The children will have the opportunity to write their own addition and subtraction stories based on real life experiences.
Mathletics
Please spend some time each week exploring the different activities that we have set for the children. Under the ‘play’ section, children can practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world. It is not intended that the children will do these tasks totally independently so please help your child to become familiar with the layout of Mathletics and how to go about completing the tasks.
Please support your child in learning how to log in using their user name and password rather than relying on an adult to do so for them. At school we are teaching the children to be independent with this skill.
Next week we will be beginning our new writing unit based on personal narratives. The children will be reading texts based on personal narratives such as, “When I was Little” by Jamie Lee Curtis. In this unit we will be focusing on the use of past tense language, writing in the first person and writing from their own personal experiences.
In Readers Workshop, the children will start to explore the concept of inference. We will begin this unit by teaching the children how to make inferences using pictures, picture books and objects.
Congratulations to our Golden Book recipients.
