Happy new year! We hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas break and are ready for the busy term ahead. This term the children will be very busy enjoying various school trips, preparing for their first BHS Student Led Conferences and class assemblies. Please look out in the Weekly Updates and Newsletter for information about all of these events.
Library
This week the Year 1 children have chosen their first non-fiction books. They enjoyed browsing the wide selection of books that we have in our Library and choosing books about topics that they are interested in. Please take the time each week to enjoy these books with your child. Remember that these books may not be at your child’s reading level and therefore they will need an adult to help them enjoy the information in the books. Please return both library books every Monday so that they can choose new books.
Clay
Miss Cassie had her last lesson with each Year 1 class this week. The children have glazed their clay tiles. These will be displayed as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations. Please ask your child about their experience with Miss Cassie.
UOI
In UOI lessons this week, the children have been reflecting on the creative arts rotations that they experienced before the Christmas holidays. They reflected on the art, drama, dance and Kamishibai story learning engagements that they were involved in. They thought about the rotation that they enjoyed most and how they used their creativity in these sessions.
Central Idea:
Imagination helps us think, create and express ourselves.
This week the children have started planning and creating their own stories using small world characters. They will continue to use their imagination and creative skills next week when they will tell their story in a way of their choosing such as, drama, art, dance, music, puppets and written stories.

Portfolios
We hope that you enjoyed sharing the Year 1 Portfolios with your child and hope that they were able to talk about their learning and explain why they chose the selected pieces of work. Thank you to all the parents who have returned the portfolios to school. We would like all portfolios to be back in school by next Monday 15th January. Thank you.
School Uniform
Now that the weather has cooled down please make sure that your child is appropriately dressed for school. Please ensure that all jumpers, jackets and coats are named with your child’s name and class. This will help us to find any lost items of clothing.
Theatre Trip and LEAP Visit
This week you will have recieved an email asking you give permission for the two trips that yoir child will be attending in January. Please fill out the eNotice permission form as soon as possible. Thank you.

Marie Marchand Parent Workshop

We are delighted to welcome back Marie Marchand to present at Beacon Hill School on January 31st from 6-8pm. This year’s focus will be positive behaviour management strategies for parents- Discipline without Shouting. Please see the details and sign up via the gateway https://tg.esf.edu.hk The cost will be $50 per person.

Marie is an excellent speaker- both entertaining and informative and we thoroughly recommend any parents from year 1-6 to come and enjoy her presentation

Student Council Fruity Friday

The last term we surveyed our students to find out how we can make BHS even better.  A lot of students wanted Fruity Friday back.  This is an opportunity for you to help your child have delicious and healthy snacks at least once a week.  Can you please support and encourage your child to bring in a fruity snack each Friday.  We do not want processed snacks with fruit in them as they contain preservatives and man-made sugar.  Thank you in advance for your support.  Fruity Friday starts on Friday 19th January.

maths

Next week the children will be learning about the concept of measurement by looking at the length of objects. They will be given the opportunity to use the language of length in practical contexts in and out of the classroom

Maths At Festival Walk

Congratulations to all the children in Year 1 who completed the Maths at Festival Walk challenge. We were so impressed by the number of children who got involved. Each child who participated will receive a certificate which we will put into their Year 1 portfolio.

Mathletics

This week we have a set of new tasks for the children to complete. Please spend some time each week exploring the different activities that we have set for the children. Under the ‘play’ section, children can practise their basic facts by playing games with partners from around the world.  It is not intended that the children will do these tasks totally independently so please help your child to become familiar with the layout of Mathletics and how to go about completing the tasks.  After Christmas there will be some new tasks set for your child.

We will be finishing our narrative unit by giving the children the opportunity to write a story based on the work we will be doing in UOI. They will be using the classroom small world toys to make up their own stories thinking about characters, setting, problem and resolution.
In our reading lessons, we will be continuing to focus on visualisation using poetry.
Phonics
Phonemes:   v w y z j n k e
Camera Words:  all me they is no said
Not all words can be decoded phonetically. We call these tricky words, ‘camera words’ because children must learn them as though they were taking a photo of the word with their ‘mind’s eye’. They are encouraged to memorise the part of the word which is tricky.

Congratulations to the following children:

1L – Hazel Cheung

1P – Kimberley Lee

1W – Idan Chung

 Hairy Maclary – Lynley Dodd
Next week the Year 1 children will be enjoying a trip to the theatre to watch Hairy Maclary. The performance is based on the popular children’s story written by the famous author Lynley Dodd. We will be sharing the book with the children in class before our trip but it would be really lovely if the children could enjoy some of Lynley Dodd’s other stories at home. Some of her most popular titles include:
