Health
PROPER Hand Hygiene
Our hands come into contact with many things during the day. For examples, lift buttons, handrails (from shopping mall escalators or MTR stations), toilet faucets, doorknobs or door handles, telephones.
To prevent the spread of harmful germs, “proper” hand hygiene is the most important method.
In Hong Kong, Hand Hygiene Awareness Day is marked annually on 5 May and it was last week, on Tuesday, being the 10th anniversary of WHO’s Clean is Safer Care Programme.
- Do we all wash our hands properly?
- Have noticed how it is done > turn on the tap > wet hands with water > shake off water from hands > the person leaves the toilet. Another observation > wet hands with water > minimal soap applied to palms of hands (only) > hand rubbing for less than five seconds > rinse with water > shake off water from hands > the person leaves the toilet, etc. etc.
After wetting hands with water and applying enough soap to cover all hand surfaces, the “Seven Steps for Hand Rubbing” include:
- Palms.
- Back of hands.
- Between fingers.
- Back of fingers.
- Thumbs.
- Fingertips.
- Wrists.
Reminder:
- To dry hands “thoroughly” with a single use towel.
- To use towel to “turn off” faucet.
Your child will receive an educational leaflet (from the Centre for Health Protection) about Hand Hygiene (i.e. WHY do it? WHO should do it? WHEN to do it? Other information included also about this topic. Please share this information with your child.
“Always Keep Hands Clean.*

- Usually the child presents with fever and itchy skin rashes.
- Please closely monitor other children in the household.
- Please consult the doctor for confirmation of diagnosis and for when to return back to school.
Thank you.
