Year 4 Sharing
This morning we welcomed the Year 4 Parents to share in their child’s learning for their first unit of inquiry, ‘Experiences and beliefs shape a person’s actions’. The children shared their learning through art, technology, dance, music and poetry. The children shared their fantastic poems that they had created and explained different poetic devices to their parents to create an anthology of poems. The children further explored with their parents what beliefs they shared and how that was reflected in their actions. Special thanks to all the Year 4 teachers, EAs and all the adults for their preparation for this sharing morning! For more photos, click HERE.
Hong Kong 16th Green Schools Award
Mr Hoskins and I were very proud to represent BHS at the 16th Hong Kong Green Schools Award ceremony to receive the Bronze Award for our Green efforts. Special thanks go to Mrs. Jane Farago and the 2017-18 BHS Green team for their hard work in preparing for the assessment and of course to the whole BHS community for their support and efforts to make BHS a much greener environment.
Congratulations also to other members of our ESF community, Kennedy School & Peak School who received awards also.
Health & Safety
The work on removing our damaged tree has now been completed and the children are thankful to be able to use the playground and hall again.
After School Arrangements
Some students are being left unsupervised in the playground after school finishes. Please do not leave your child in the playground without supervision after school as there is no playground supervision of children by staff after school finishes. Students waiting for clubs must have a supervising adult with them.
If your child does not participate in any after school activity they are to go home immediately after the end of the school day. Only children in clubs should remain after school and this is going to be monitored in the future. Parents will be contacted if unsupervised children are left at school or supervision is not adequate.
This is for the safety and well being of your children.
Community Choir
Our BHS Community Choir will resume after the October half term break. This is open to all parents of BHS students and to BHS Staff. The choir will be rehearsing on Thursday evenings from 7pm. We would hope to perform at the BHS Christmas Concert. No auditions or previous singing experience – just lots of enthusiasm needed!

Mandarin Mondays
Mandarin Mondays Club will resume on Monday 8th October.
ISA Assessments for Years 4, 5 and 6
Students in Year 4, 5 and 6 will sit the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) next week. The ISA assessment has been specially developed to measure skills in mathematical literacy, reading and writing of students in international schools. The ISA has been developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research.
ESF students will complete the writing, reading and mathematical literacy components of the assessment. (Students in Year 6 will also take the INCAS assessment at the end of Year 6.) We will receive the results of the assessment early Term 2 and individual reports will be accessible via the Gateway. This will give you a detailed record of your child’s performance in mathematical literacy, reading literacy and writing.
Your child will complete a reading literacy test, a mathematical literacy test and two writing tests, each of which takes between 45 minutes and one hour to administer. The tests include both multiple-choice and open-ended tasks. The children will take part in the assessments during their class lessons and do not need to do any preparation for the tests as the process will be similar to tasks they experience as part of their normal day to day work.

Student Achievement
2 years ago, Karan Mukhi, 5C, decided to let his hair grow for a good cause and donate it to an organization called “Mechones Solidarios” where they make wigs for children with Cancer. It was a long journey full of anecdotes while he was letting his hair grow and he had sometimes moments of giving up but he finally did it and his sister, Sofia Mukhi, 2F, followed his steps and decided to cut and donate her hair too. What a wonderful act of kindness! Well done Karan and Sofia!
On September 25th, Ally Chen, 2K, joined “Girls 5 Year Olds 25 SC Meter Breaststroke” race at TPS Swimming Gala Programme 2018 in Whampoa and won first runner-up award. Congratulations Ally!
Also on September 25, Jayla Chung, 4F, got her first gold medal of 25M freestyle swimming competition. Jayla showed her bravery and grit, we are proud of her and she said she had great fun too. Well done Jayla!
Alfie Lo, 2D, participated in his first arithmetic competition. He took part in the 11th International City Cup Abacus & Mental Arithmetic Competition and managed to win a Silver Award. Congratulations Alfie!
At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school. BHS Lunchtime Experiences
At BHS we have lots of great clubs which our students really enjoy so Ms Chung challenged us to create even more! As the student councillors we interviewed our friends and classmates to find out their favourite clubs. We were wondering if any parents would like to help run these clubs? Do not panic! You do not need to be an expert or world champion, just enthusiastic and willing to help. This could be as an one off session or more, it is up to you. Please click on this google form to volunteer. The Student Council will then get in contact with you to organise the club. We will help with all the logistics such as venue, students and resources.

The Beacon Hill School mobile app has been updated with a new interface and various improvements and fixes. We apologise for the users that were unable to use the old version following a recent iOS update, this problem has now been fixed. The app allows you to:

Uniforms

Winter uniforms will be available for sale after the mid term break. However we are experiencing delivery problems with jackets and fleeces which we have been advised may not be available until November.

Due to the impact of Typhoon Mangkhut, ESF Festival of Music has been postponed.
We know that a huge amount of hard work and effort has gone into preparing for the event, so this is not the end. We will reschedule the concerts for later in the year. The show will go on!

URSTRONG – Quarry Bay School
Dear Parents/Carers,
Quarry Bay School is pleased to announce that they will be hosting URSTRONG, an internationally recognized Social Emotional Wellbeing program, on Thursday 25th October.
The aim of URSTRONG is to empower children with the skills, language and self-confidence to be better friends and develop healthier relationships. To learn more about URSTRONG and their programmes please watch this short video which describes the impact of URSTRONG on children and parents around the globe.
URSTRONG will be holding two Language of Friendship workshops on Thursday, 25th October at Quarry Bay School. The workshops have been designed for parents/carers to attend with their children.

Head Lice
We would like to inform you of the fact that two children had head lice. The students completed the treatment at home and returned to school.
The eggs of the head lice are usually found near the root of the hair and there is the sensation of an itchy scalp.
Nits are tiny and whitish, yellowish or brownish in colour.
How do you catch it?
- Via direct head-to-head contact with the infested person.
- The lice crawls.
If you suspect that the child has head lice, please have it treated by using medicated lotion or shampoo prescribed by the doctor to destroy the head lice.
The use of a fine-toothed comb may help to remove the nits and please throw away the eggs properly.
Please check the child’s hair regularly for signs of head lice.
Please check your eyebrows or beard, if you have one.
- Anyone may catch it.

71st Hong Kong Schools Music Festival
The application form for entering 71st Hong Kong School Music Festival will be ready for you to pick up at the school front desk from Friday 28th September, 2018. If your child/(ren) wants to participate in this competition, please return the application form and application fee in total of HK$200 in a cheque payable to “Beacon Hill School” to the school office on or before Wednesday 10th October, 2018. (The transportation fee was added on the application fee for our staff to pick up and drop off forms/certificates.)
Any late application received after the deadline will not be accepted.
Please note that ESF school education level is not equivalent to the local school system. If you enrol in the year group programme, please cross check with the following table for the correct age group. HKSMSA is based on the local school system for enrolment.
