Dear Parents

It has been lovely having the whole school back together after our camp season and life at BHS is as busy as ever.

Congratulations to 2K for a fabulous assembly this morning all about ways in which we can reduce our waste.  They shared how waste like plastic bottles, food packaging, plastic bags and straws end up in our landfill and how this is a problem because the landfill is almost full!

Takig inspiration from our students, we are making efforts to be more environmentally conscious.  We have several events coming up which we would like our children to bring their own reusable containers from home.

Pizza Lunches – Bring own reusable plate or container from home.

PTA Disco – Bring own reusable cup and bowl from home for snack and drink.

Christmas Parties – Bring own reusable cup and bowl from home for snack and drink.

The Great Beacon Hill Bake Off is BACK!

Our Great Beacon Hill Bake Off is BACK and will take place on Wednesday 12th December. To take part, you need to bake a cake / some cakes, cookies, gingerbread houses, mince pies etc at home which you are happy to donate and deliver them to school on the morning of 12th December when they will be judged. All of the cakes will then be on display and available for sale that evening at the Christmas Concert and the winner will be announced. Please make sure your entry is clearly labelled and any containers you send your cakes in have your child’s name and class marked on them so we can return them to you.

Last Year’s Winning Entry!

Wellbeing Focus

On Friday 7th December, we will be hosting our first ever Student Wellbeing Day.  On this day, all children should come to school wearing casual clothes in their House colours.  The teachers and some EAs are leading a wide range of activities for the day with a focus on Keep Learning, Take Notice and Be Active.  The children have chosen the activities they would like to do on this day.  The aims of this day is for the children to:

  • Challenge themselves to try new things
  • Connect and make new friends
  • Support each other
  • Reflect on their wellbeing

Mandarin Mondays

We have been reading stories from the famous Chinese novel “Journey to the West” in our Mandarin Club every Monday. Now you all know Monkey King is our hero and he has extraordinary powers. However, do you know where he came from? Who were his father and mother? Why is he so different from all other monkeys? Where did he live before he went on the Journey? And, how did he become the King?  We have read stories about Monkey King’s amazing powers, his strong spirit, and his battles and fights against various monsters. But we have not read a story about himself. Well, this time, let’s find out who he is. So, come join us on Monday and find out all about Monkey King.

Uniform for the colder weather

We have been extremely fortunate with the weather so far this November but now as the weather turns cooler please ensure that if vests or T-shirts are worn under the uniform they are not visible.  We recognise that there is a delay in receiving the orders of proper BHS winter uniform so we understand if children need to wear other jumpers and jackets.  Where possible, please ensure these are plain and dark coloured.  If wearing their own jackets for P.E., please ensure that they are able to be fastened completely as flapping garments poses a health and safety risk for physical activities.

Festive Season

The festive season is my favourite time of the year.  I love admiring the decorations in the shopping malls and the sounds of Christmas Music but I especially love the chance to watch our very own BHS Chamber Choir perform around HK.  Here are the dates and venues for their performances in December:

Our students will also be having their class parties in the final week and some year groups may get a special visitor while others will be engaged in Secret Santa gift giving!  Please note DCK lunches will be cancelled on your child’s class party day.

Tuesday 11th December – Years 1, 2 and 3 Parties

Wednesday 12th December – Year 5 Party

Thursday 13th December – Year 4 & 6 Parties

CIS Preparatory Evaluation

In March 2019, BHS will be hosting a preparatory visit from the Council of International Schools.  They are an accrediting organisation who supports schools in their journey to continued excellence.  As part of this process, I will need to gather views from our Parents, School Council, Staff and Students as to how appropriate our Vision and Mission is for the students we serve.  I would be grateful if you could spare a few minutes to complete the google forms linked here.

Student Achievement

Ingrid Siu (4F) participated in the 4th Hong Kong Taekwando ITF Championship competition on November 25 and got a Gold medal in girls sparring for her age group.  This is her second sparring competition and she’s very happy that she has improved tremendously. Good job Ingrid!

On November 14th, Madan Chhetri (5F) participated in the World TaeKwanDo Poomsae Championship,  the 2018 跆拳道品藝挑戰賽~速度王爭霸. He put in his best effort and won the Gold medal! Well done Madan!

At BHS we value the importance of developing the ‘whole’ child and this means valuing their achievement and interests outside of school.  If your child has achieved something special, we would be happy to share that with the BHS community through this newsletter.  Please email details and a photograph to kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk

HKPSSA Football Championship

On Saturday 24th November the school football team participated in the HKPSSA football championships. The team were drawn in the toughest group possible (with 4 of the teams going onto win their finals!). The team fought very hard in the group stage and made super tackles and never stopped running. Although we didn’t win a game Mr Thompson and I were impressed with their tenacity, spirit and determination to never give up.

In the knockout stages the team produced the results they deserved with a great 2 nil win over Kowloon Junior with Rei scoring an absolute cracker! In the final of the medal competition we played Discovery College and it was a very tight game and once again our tenacity in never giving up paid off as we held on to draw nil all. This meant the game went to penalties and with all three of our penalties (Maxi, Ryan and Alfie) being expertly taken and Andy saving one we won the penalty shoot out 3-1. Well done to the players for their improvement throughout the day and thanks to the parents for their fantastic support. Click HERE for more photos.

Kowloon Netball Tournament

On Tuesday the 27th of November some of the girls from BHS participated in the Kowloon netball tournament at KJS. Our first match was against CWBS, we fought hard but sadly lost 3-5. Our second match was against RCHK and we beat them 3-1. Our next match was against DC and with great effort from all players we managed to beat them 8-2. For our fourth game we were against KJS, but unfortunately we lost 4-0.  We were third in our group and went on to play against ICHK and won 3-2. This meant we finished 5th overall. Our star players of the tournaments were Rachel and Alicia. We would like to thank Ms Younie and Ms Andrews for coaching us and all the parents who came to support us.
