Dear Parents,

Here are the remaining dates of this term for your information:

IMPORTANT DATES

There is some important information in the PTA section about hot lunches after the summer break. If you know you would like your child to have hot lunches then please read the section and make sure your order is submitted as soon as possible.

Hill (2A) joined the Sportscene Gymnastics competition on 18th June. She came 2nd in the Trampoline, 5th in the Floor and 10th in All Round. This is the first time she joined the gymnastics competition and was rewarded with her efforts and passion for gymnastics. Congratulations Hill!

End of Year Reports will be available for parents from the evening of Monday 25th June. (via The Beacon for Year 1 and 2 students; via The Gateway for Year 3 to 6 students). These reports provide parents and students with information regarding academic and social progress and development. Please do take the time to read them and discuss with your child. We recommend you save and print off copies for future reference.

Have a lovely weekend.

News from the English Team

Last week in the newsletter, I shared some of the statistics from the library this year, This information included the names of our top three student borrowers all of whom are in Year 5:  Stella Chan, Sophie Huang in 5F and Alicia Wong from 5D.

This week we would like to share the top 20 fiction and nonfiction reads according to the children’s borrowing records. How many have been part of your child’s reading journey this year?

As we stop home and library borrowing for the year we ask that the children are still encouraged to read just as much as ever, perhaps they can set up a book swap with friends using their own collection, visit the local library or access the huge range of books on Big Universe?

Super readers!

Our special 50th Anniversary Reading Challenge is now closed and huge congratulations to all the children who got involved.  We have received some great feedback about the challenge from the children and we will definitely consider a similar activity for next year.  One parent wrote to explain how the challenge had led to their daughter reading books that she previously thought were too hard for her and they had fun finding the books together.  All the children who completed the challenge and handed it to me by the deadline are listed below, they will receive house points and a certificate to recognise their efforts.

A special mention must go to Glamour and Scott Poon in Year 1 who were the first children in school to return their completed challenges!

Here is a lovely photo of Kyla Ho from 1L with just some of the books she read as part of the challenge.

I did receive two unnamed entries so if you know your child handed in their challenge and isn’t on the list let me know and I will make sure they get a certificate.

Battle of the Books

This year Mrs Lamb and I have run the Battle of the Books club, this is a chance for our avid readers to test their comprehension skills and develop their ability to memorise a huge amount of information.  Although this year we didn’t participate in the Hong Kong wide competition the children have had lots of fun reading and discussing the books and last week enjoyed a mini battle with each other.  Here are some pictures of the club members answering questions about the 20 books which they had to read and remember in detail.  If your child is a keen, confident reader and in Year 4 and up they may want to get involved in the club next term.  The reading list is available for those children who want to get a head start, there are always an interesting range of books to choose from.

Hot Lunches

Last week your child should have brought home the August / September lunch order form from our new lunch provider, Delicious Chef King Catering Ltd.
Up till now we have received less than 70 orders, well short of our targeted 120.  If orders fall below 100 we may be left with no choice but to suspend the provision of hot lunches.  If your child would like hot lunches on return from the summer break, please fill in the order form.  Deadline for order was 22nd June so please return as soon as possible.

Please help support this service by trying out the new lunches.
Order forms can be downloaded here : Beacon Hill School – ESF » DCK Menu
