Dear Parents,

Welcome back to our final term of the school year. I hope you were able to enjoy a relaxing time with family and friends over the holiday period. We have been busy making final preparations for our IB Evaluation Team visit next week when two evaluators will be in school, visiting classrooms and meeting with students, staff and some parents. We are looking forward to a very positive visit and we will share the final report when we receive it later in the term.

Today we launched our ‘Fruity Friday Movie’ campaign to encourage students to bring delicious, healthy fruit for their snack which they can enjoy eating whilst watching a movie in the hall. We hope that you can support your child in this and if possible, stretch the ‘Fruity Friday’ to every day!

On Wednesday, Mr Lowe and several Year 6 students welcomed about 25 teachers from across Hong Kong schools to learn more about how our students are using technology, particularly Micro:bit, to enhance their learning. The students led the afternoon by demonstrating the many different resources and applications the different year groups have been using. Well done to the children and thank you to Mr Lowe for his dedication in ensuring BHS is at the cutting edge of technology in education.

We are now approaching the time of year when the temperature is increasing and also when we may have heavy rain. Please ensure your child has a named BHS hat with them each day so that they can play outside. Also you may wish to refer to our ‘Bad Weather’ procedures on our website – https://www.beaconhill.edu.hk/bad-weather-procedures/

IMPORTANT DATES

Student Achievement Beyond School

On 7th April, Hena (5D), Nathelie (5D), Sera (5F) and Yi Wing (5D) formed a team to represent Beacon Hill School to participate in the All Hong Kong Inter-Primary Schools Gymnastics Competition, Girls C Grade.  The team achieved 3rd place in the vault, and 5th place in the floor exercise. In total, the team ranked 5th. We have boys and girls who will participate in the Girls B Grade, Boys A Grade and Boys C Grade which will be held in May. Well done to the girls in their achievement and good luck to the other teams.

Tree Planting

You may remember that last year some Beacon Hill School students were able to go with Mr Melsom and myself to plant trees near to Mui Wul last year. Mr Melsom and I would like to invite eight Year Fives and Sixes and an adult to join us again in May the 5th, a later date than first proposed. This was a very successful event last year and I would like to open it out to children who have not done it before first. There is a maximum number of 16 people for safety. We will meet at the Central Ferry Pier 6 at  1.50 p.m. and return from Mui Wo on the 6.40 p.m. ferry to Central. The walk up to the plantation area is up to an elevation of 150m and the tree planters carry the trees and spades so the tree planters must be reasonably fit. This is a non-profit activity and there is a small fee of $35 per person which is to cover tree planting costs, the on-going materials,  the tree delivery costs and the maintenance of the trees including tree guards, tools and fertiliser, $70 for the child and adult. Letters will be outside my classroom from Monday, so students please come and get one. This will be done on a first come first serve basis.

Endangered Animal Art Competition

I have had some beautiful entries to this competition. If you still wish to enter this competition, please get your artwork in before the end of April. You can choose any endangered animal and any style of art.

BHS Clothes Drive with Redress Asia

A huge thank you to all the people who have donated to our Redress Asia Clothes Drive.  This is a great opportunity to donate unwanted clothes to a fantastic cause.  We have one more week to go, all clothes must be in by Friday 27th April.  We are looking for:

  • Good quality clothes, accessories and shoes for women, men and children.
  • Clean items.
  • No underwear, socks, swimsuits or home textiles.

Donations will be collected and carefully sorted by Redress for distribution to local HK charities. Top quality clothing will be sold to raise funds for Redress in a pop-up shop following the drive, whilst the clothes that cannot be used for the charity beneficiaries will be kept for Redress’ new circular economy initiative and ultimately recycled into new yarns!

Please support Redress’ work to cut waste out of fashion!

For more information please visit the Redress website: https://www.redress.com.hk
