Dear Parents, Family and Friends,
Peter Sullivan is Professor of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, at Monash University in Australia and is one of the world’s leading authorities in Mathematics. He will be making his first visit to Beacon Hill School from May 18th-19th. During his visit, Professor Sullivan will work alongside the teachers to challenge all our students to reach their full potential in Mathematics through the use of open-ended, rich learning tasks and problems.
Professor Sullivan will run a workshop for parents, on Thursday 18th May at 7pm in our school hall, in order to enhance your understanding of how you may help your children in the development of mathematical thinking. If you would like to take this wonderful opportunity to attend and learn from a leading expert in the field, click here to register, or email Mrs Mulligan – marie@bhs.edu.hk
I hope you were able to enjoy the extended holiday this week, with the weather being rather pleasant. With this in mind I would like to remind you to be alert to the weather forecasts as we enter the summer period. For information about the arrangements for when there is disruptive weather please refer to our website – https://www.beaconhill.edu.hk/bad-weather-procedures/
Thank you to everyone in 2M who shared their assembly with us this morning. They sang, danced and acted their hearts out helping us to understand the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset. It was fabulous to hear about their aspirations, big and not so big and importantly, what they need to do to achieve them. Well done 2M on a great assembly! Thank you to Mr McCallum, Mrs Sanghvi, Ms Barr, Mr Bernie, Mrs Mehek, Ms Kannis for their work with the class and finally thank you to the parents and family for supporting the children.
Year 3 Action Day – today the Year 3s have been holding a range of events in their ‘Action Day’ with their purpose being to raise awareness and funds for several charities. There has been a toy and book stall, a movie and popcorn at lunchtime, a juice stall, a mini-football tournament and even zumba! Well done to all Year 3 and their teachers – the money they raised will be donated to Indochina Starfish Foundation, Christina Noble Children’s Foundation, OneSky and Crossroads.
Well done to our dancers who performed at last Friday’s ‘Celebration of Dance’ at KJS. I was hugely proud of them with their dazzling performance. It was a great evening. Thank you to those teachers who stayed with the children all afternoon and throughout the evening. Thanks especially to Kenny Tsang and Agnes Chan, parents of Karsten Tsang in 2K.

More Action
On Tuesday 2nd May Mrs Barbara Woo, our Office Manager, took part in and ESF organised event to support elderly communities in Hong Kong. It was the sticky rice dumpling day! This is part of the ESFs corporate social responsibility action. Well done and thanks to Barbara and all the ESF colleagues who helped out.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Information Literacy
At Beacon Hill School the children are taught a range of skills as part of the Information Literacy curriculum. They learn how to ask good questions and find reliable information that will help them learn. In today’s connected world finding information is very easy but it can be overwhelming, we encourage the children to ask “Is this information useful?” and “Is it reliable?”. Talking to your child about checking facts and being skeptical about what they see on the internet is valuable.
When your child is searching for information online at home make sure that they are using a child friendly and child safe search engine. Although this doesn’t guarantee that the children will not access unsuitable material, adult supervision is the only way to do that, it will help to make their search safer.
Have you seen this website? https://www.commonsensemedia.org/
It is a fabulous resource for parents as it gives reviews and recommendations for books, films, games and apps. There is often a recommended age given and a brief overview of the content which will help you to decide whether it is suitable for your child. I often use it when buying books for the library.
Take a look at the ‘Family Guides’ page which gives lots of useful information, I particularly enjoyed reading the suggestions for getting children’s hooked on books.
If you have any questions about Information Literacy at school please do not hesitate to get in touch.
