Dear Parents, Family and Friends,
The raffle tickets are selling very well for our International Food Fair which is on Friday 24th March, but there is still time to sell even more. Remember the two classes that sell the most tickets will win a prize – a day out for the whole class! All proceeds are put back into improving Beacon Hill School, so please do what you can to help. This is a community event so please bring along family and friends and neighbours.
IMPORTANT DATES
This week has been another busy and exciting week of learning. On Tuesday our Year 2 classes travelled to various locations around Hong Kong to experience a range of different types of transport systems. Thanks to all the parents who came along to make sure the trip was successful and safe.
As part of our programme to ensure a smooth transition to secondary school for our Year 6 students, teachers and students from KGV, Sha Tin College and Island School visited us on Tuesday afternoon. The children had chance to ask questions and allay any worries they may have about the move in just a few months time. A group of Year 6 children also visited Island School this week to enjoy their annual Art Exhibition.
Yesterday our Year 5 children demonstrated their entrepreneurial business skills with the Big Business Market Day. They have worked hard for several weeks to be ready for the event and any profit they make will be donated to a charity we have supported for the last few years in Sudan which helps a local kindergarten – http://www.immanuelkindergarten.org/305391271 . Thank you to all the children who brought in their pocket money to buy goodies – their purchases will help to make a difference to children who lead less privileged lives to ours. Photos can be found HERE.
On Wednesday afternoon we hosted a group educationalists from Wales and Northern Ireland who are part of the International Professional Learning Community. This visit was organised by the British Council in Hong Kong. The purpose was for the group to witness first-hand our approach to the teaching and learning of technology at Beacon Hill School. Mr Lowe spent the afternoon with them and they were highly impressed not only with our Learning Technology programme and facilities but also with our students.
Yesterday I attended the annual Basketball Tournament at KJS organised by Mr Teahan. We had one team entered, who have been coached by Ms Jane Wu. A report on this event will be shared in the newsletter later.
This morning 2K shared their class assembly and despite having to contend with intermittent absences of students recently due to sickness, they presented us with a wonderful assembly., sharing their learning about materials. Well done to 2K and their teachers and thank you to the parents for coming to watch.
Action
Starting this week we have been celebrating books and reading in our annual ‘Book Week’ which has grown into ‘7 Days of ABCs and 1 2 3s’, including Maths too. We have had author visits this week and exciting lunchtime activities for the children to take part in. As part of this event we are supporting the Heifer organisation and their ‘Read to Feed’ programme. You can find details about this, some resources and a sponsorship form to download later in in this newsletter. I hope that you can encourage your child to read more books and help foster a love of reading whilst helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
BHS 50th Anniversary – ‘design a logo’ competition
We will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of BHS throughout the 2017-18 academic year. We have a planning committee who are already working on some special events to mark this milestone. One important feature is to use a special BHS 50th anniversary logo which will be used on publicity materials, communications and items linked to the anniversary. We are opening this up as a competition – anyone may enter; students, parents, ex-students, teachers, educational assistants, site staff; in fact anyone with a connection to BHS. The only criteria is that it is represents BHS 50th year. Entries may be submitted in any medium and either electronically or by hand. Please send entries to:
or post to Beacon Hill School, 23 Ede Road, Kowloon Tong
or hand in at Reception.
The closing date for entries is Monday 8th May.
Home Learning at BHS
We are reviewing our Home Learning policy (you are probably more familiar with the term ‘homework’) to ensure it aligns with our philosophy. We value parental input into our policy formulation so would appreciate just a few minutes of your time to complete this very short survey.

Heifer Read to Feed – Reading for Empathy, Reading against Poverty!
We are delighted to inform you that BHS is participating in the Heifer Read to Feed program, an educational fund-raising program that fosters a love of reading in students while empowering them to make a difference in rural China. We hope you can support your child to join this meaningful program. The sponsored programme will kick-off on Monday 13th March, the first day of our Book Week and run until Tuesday 18th April, the first day back at school after the Easter holiday.
Students taking part are encouraged to read while collecting sponsorship from parents, relatives and friends based on the number of books read or a single donation. Funds collected this school year will be used to assist impoverished families in Wadu Township of Baoshan City in Yunnan Province. The money will be used to help them become self-reliant by providing livestock and training with the ultimate goal of helping more families in the community from “Passing on the Gift” – that is recipients donate their animal offspring and pass on their new animal husbandry knowledge to other villagers.
We appreciate your encouragement and support of your child while he or she participates in Read to Feed, allowing them to enjoy reading and helping others for a better world. Thank you!

BHS Dance Off Winners
Last week we had two fabulous lunches watching our highly talented dancers perform at lunchtime. The standard was incredibly high and a panel of teacher judges laboured over the very hard decision of selecting 6 winners. This proved too difficult so we decided to have seven winners who are listed below. All of these will perform at the BHS Talent Show at the International Food Fair on Friday 24th March. More information will be given nearer the time. I would like to finish by thanking all the participants for their hard work and talent.

We would like to inform you of the fact that one child has head lice. The child will complete the treatment at home and to return to school in due course.

How do you catch it?
- Via direct head to head contact with the infested person.
- The lice crawls.
If you suspect that the child has head lice, please have it treated by using medication lotion or shampoo prescribed by the doctor to destroy the head lice. The use of a fine-toothed comb may help to remove the nits and please throw away the eggs properly.
