Dear Parents, Family and Friends,
Sports Day
Sports Day for Years 1 and 2 was just as wonderful as the one for our older students that took place last week and although we didn’t have the sunshine, it was actually better for the children to have cooler conditions. If you have any strong opinions on splitting our sports day into two separate days please let me know. Photos can be found HERE.
Chickenpox
We have several students who have been confirmed to have Chickenpox. Most of the cases are children in 2G but there are other cases in other classes. We are updating the Centre for Health Protection on a regular basis and are following their advice. I would ask that you keep a close eye on your child, checking for any signs of a rash. Sometimes other symptoms may start a day or two before the rash appears.
These can include:
- feeling tired and generally unwell
- a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or over
- feeling sick
- a headache
- aching, painful muscles
- loss of appetite
Not everyone has these symptoms. If in doubt please keep your child away from school and consult a doctor. This link to the Centre for Health Protection website may be of interest. Thank you for your assistance.
Home Learning
We are reviewing our Home Learning policy (you are probably more familiar with the term ‘homework’) to ensure it aligns with our philosophy. We value parental input into our policy formulation so would appreciate just a few minutes of your time to complete this very short survey.

Class Assembly
Well done to 4L who shared their class assembly with the school and their parents this morning. They are half way through their current Unit of Inquiry and we heard about what they know about structures. There was music, dance and they used drama to tell the story of ‘Iggy Peck, Architect’. Thanks to Ms Fisher and the other adults who supported the children.
Here are some of the upcoming events to note:
IMPORTANT DATES
Sports
Last Saturday we had many students participating on the ESF 50th Anniversary Sports Gala at KGV. The morning kicked off with cross-country running and was followed by football and netball. Well done and thank you to the children who participated and to Mr Teahan, Mr Thompson and Mr Pheasant for supporting the children.
International Food Fair
The raffle tickets are selling well but there is still time to sell even more. All proceeds are put back into improving Beacon Hill School, so please do what you can to help.
Learning and Teaching at BHS
Earlier this academic year the staff spent time discussing and examining what we believe excellent learning and teaching means for us at Beacon Hill School. We have finally come to an agreement of the ‘Beacon Hill School Shared Philosophy of Learning and Teaching’- please find a copy of this here. This underpins our entire approach and guides our decision-making. One example of where this can apply is in a review of our Homework policy (we now use the term Home Learning) which we have recently begun. Here’s just one article which you may find interesting – https://www.edutopia.org/blog/research-trends-is-homework-effective-youki-terada .Please take a short time to complete the Home Learning survey (the link is near the beginning of the Newsletter).
On Wednesday night I had the pleasure of attending the ESF 50th Anniversary Secondary Music Concert. It was a wonderful mix of choral, orchestral and solo performances and what I particularly enjoyed was spotting all the ex-BHS students showcasing their talents. Well done to all of them and I am looking forward to the ESF 50th Anniversary Primary Choral Concert in March.
Best wishes,
_

Parent Volunteers Needed
Our Year 5 students are currently working on their big business unit where they are creating their own businesses and running a market day to raise money. As part of the unit the children have been asked to give a presentation to a panel of business experts. We are looking for volunteer business experts who can offer advice to the children and give positive feedback to groups of children. The presentations are held over two days, on Thursday 9th March and Friday 10th March.
If you are able to be an expert on either day, or even for part of one of the days, please email me at: chad.pheasant@bhs.edu.hk

After the cross country there was a Kowloon vs Island Schools football and netball tournament. Praise, Ronny, Jotaro and Jovan were the football representatives from Beacon Hill and Carrie, Chantal, Avina and Courteney for the netball. All of the Beacon Hill students played well and should be proud to have been selected for the Kowloon Schools. Honours were shared on the day with Kowloon winning the football and Island winning the netball.

There was also an official photographer on the day and when I receive their photos I will forward them on.

Touch Rugby
Well done to both the boys and girls touch rugby teams who participated in the recent DBIS touch tournament. For nearly half the players it was their first time playing touch rugby competitively. The boys team made it to the cup quarter finals which is a tremendous achievement. The girls team improved as the day went on and played outstanding rugby especially in the knockout stage and were the plate winners. The highlight of the day was the try in the semi final with an amazing skillful pass from Mia to Natalee. Andreas and Natalee were chosen as Beacon Hill’s players of the tournament. Thanks to all the parents who came to support the players and thanks to Mrs Wu for her coaching.
