Dear Parents,

Welcome back to our third and final term of this academic year. It is lovely to see all the children back in school with smiling, happy faces ready to take on the new challenges this term. It is also wonderful to see the sunny weather – let’s hope it lasts long enough to allow our Sports Day next week to take place! With the warmer weather, please make sure your child wears appropriate school uniform, including hats – our policy is ‘no hat, no play’.

The final week before the Easter break was very busy, with the wonderful ESF Primary Choral Concert, our Green Week, the Year 5 Big Business Market Day, Student-Led Conferences, our Junior Choir Easter Concert and finishing off with our Easter Assembly. Thank you to all of the children and adults who helped with these events.

This week has seen the children settling back into routines. Today 5D shared their Class Assembly, all about their Big Business experience. It was great to hear about how the children looked into so many different aspects of setting up and running a business, including social responsibilities. Well done 5D!

News of some upcoming events

  • Sports Day is set for next Wednesday, April 22nd. We will monitor the weather and hope for a dry day. If there are any changes we will put a notice on the school website on the morning of the 22nd.

  • 4W Class Assembly is on Friday 24th April.

  • Tournament of the Mind Competition is on Saturday 25th April at KJS.

  • We will be having an ‘International Day’ on April 30th. We will talk to the children about this nearer the time. Miss Trotter has included more information later in this Newsletter.

LSC Review

Before the Easter break, a team from ESF visited us to carry out a Review of our Learning Support provision. We have now received the final report and this can be viewed via our website. The review was outstanding and I would like to thank all staff members who contribute day-in, day-out to the success of our inclusive approach, and also thanks to Mrs McLaughlin and her very capable team who lead our LSC and SEN Department. Here are just a a few quotes from the report:

‘Teaching is well planned and organised.’

‘..outstanding examples of the mainstream class curriculum being extensively differentiated, adapted and/or augmented to meet the needs of students in the LSC.’

‘The pastoral programs are extensive, well planned and effective.’

‘The school has a strong ethos of inclusion for all.’

‘The BHS LSC has an extremely high profile across the school and across ESF. Beacon Hill is world leading in this area.’

School Closures

School will be closed on Friday 1st May for the Public Holiday and also on Monday 4th May for a CPD Day.

We will also be closed on Friday 22nd May (BHS CPD Day) and Monday 25th May (Public Holiday)

A draft calendar for the new academic year 2015-16 is available on our website.

Best wishes,

James Harrison

Environment

Before the Easter holidays BHS had Green Week. Together with money raised from the Green Team stall at the Food Fair and activities from Green Week, BHS raised just over $7300. Well done BHS! The money raised will go to WWF and Animals Asia to help with their conservation efforts.

During Green Week there was an endangered species art competition. From the entries submitted it is clear that BHS is full of very talented artists. Well done to all who took part.

The winners were: Ethan Lo 1W, Gabby Moore 2J, Sean Li 3D and Justin Li 3K, Matthew McCoy 4C, Maadhav Chand 5A, Noor Rizvi 6H.

The runners up were: Jasmine Maruli 1T, Gabbie Patience 2A, Julien Walle 3H, Stacey Lau 4M, Hailey Walle 5A, Bonnie Tsui 6F.

Please visit the school website for more pictures of Green Week.

 International Day

Dear Parents,

International Day will soon be upon us and we are looking for parent volunteers to help on the day, the 30th April. We are very grateful for all the assistance we receive at school and would like to invite you to join in with us. This is an opportunity for you to share something with the children from a culture you know well. This might involve sharing a game, doing some cooking or teaching a dance. Maybe you have a very particular skill or a favourite story you would like to share. The day will have an art focus so if you would like share an art or craft from your culture we would love to have you join in with us at school.

If you are interested in helping on the day, whether on your own or in a group, please email Jane Trotter at jane.trotter@bhs.edu.hk
We are very grateful for all the assistance we receive at school, thank you. We hope you really enjoy the day.

ESFC is hosting an ex-ESF parent who has recently written a book describing her experience of raising her son Thomas in Hong Kong, as well as her own personal journey as a mother of a ‘special needs’ boy. This I am sure will be of interest to many. If you would like to attend please follow the registration link in the flyer.
