Music Monthly Update #6
Using children’s action songs like “My Name is Pinocchio”, “This Old Man”, “Okki Tokki Unga” and others, we will explore pulse and rhythm.
Students will learn how to recall and copy rhythms and patterns and how to create rhythm patterns based on words and phrases.
We are thinking about the different materials used for making musical instruments and exploring the the sound qualities of each.
We will think about sound vibration and how musical sounds travel through the air from the musical instrument to our ears.
We are continuing to think about “Painting with Sounds”.
Using a picture as a stimulus students are working in small groups to structure meaningful sound patterns into short compositions that describe aspects of the picture.
Students are continuing to develop their repertoire of songs and chords on the ukulele. They are learning the chords C, G7, Amin and F and are increasing their repertoire of songs.
We have recently started a lunch time ukulele club on Thursdays.
As part of their ”Big Business” unit, students are composing and recording a musical jingle that advertises their product.
They will also explore the role of underscoring to create a specific mood or image for their advertisement.
We are exploring the way composers write music in different styles.
Students have been working on their own Chinese compositions using a pentatonic scale.
We will be starting to rehearse songs for the Yr 6 Exhibition. We hope to have a small instrumental group accompanying. We are also examining the role of a songwriter and composer and how meanings are conveyed through lyrics, melodic lines and harmonic progressions such as 12 bar blues.
