Mandarin Monthly Update #3
1F – Students will learn to name basic colours in Mandarin. By the end of this topic, they should be able to say basic colours in Mandarin and read 红,黄,蓝,白,绿。
Year 2 – Students in Year Two will be learning phrases and sentences that are related to weather, change of seasons, colours and animals.
Year 3 – Students in Year Three have finished learning the Pinyin system and they should be able to read Pinyin with more confidence now. They will be learning 上学校,上学真开心,上学歌 in the next unit.
Year 4 – Students in Year Four have started to learn about seasons and weather in 我是谁,雪,and 白云娃娃。Their next unit of study will be – Famous Poems from the Tang Dynasty.
Year 5 – Students in Year Five have been busy creating their own family trees in Google Classroom during Mandarin as a link to the unit “Where we are in place and time”. They will be learning新加坡拉,组屋歌,爷爷的童年and 雷公公和电婆婆 in the next few weeks.
Year 6 – Students in Year Six will focus on the following topics in their next unit: countries, languages and nationalities.
1W The Year Ones have been settling into school excellently. They seem to thoroughly enjoy the stories we read in Mandarin at the beginning of most lessons. We have started our second topic of Body Parts and the students are progressing well.
Yr2. The students have begun forming sentences with some key characters we have learnt. We also begin every lesson with a story in Mandarin to improve their listening and comprehension.
Yr3. The children are progressing well with learning pin yin. We have been learning rhymes using the sounds we have learnt from practising our pin yin and the children are improving their pronunciation and listening skills.
Yr4. Children have finished 小学华文1B。We are starting 小学华文 2A
Yr5 The students have been learning about zoos and zodiac animals. We have also been using the dictionary to expand our vocabulary whilst learning about radicals and why they are important.
Yr6. The students just finished chapter 3 titled “The Ocean World”. We are using this chapter to learn how to write longer more creative compositions. Our goal is to complete a piece of writing each week.
1L: After learning about numbers and polite expressions, students are trying to do a longer self-introduction in Mandarin. We will be learning about body parts. They also practise Chinese character recognition as well as strokes of Chinese writing.
Year 2: We have been learning about fruits and direction words in Mandarin. The children should be able to sing a fruit song in Mandarin. They also practise Chinese character recognition as well as strokes of Chinese writing.
Year 3: We have learned the texts: “小画家” , “讲礼貌“ and “找朋友“. We have been practising 礼貌用语 with focus on Chinese character recognition as well as strokes of Chinese writing..
Year 4: We have learned family members including grandpa, grandma, uncle, aunt etc in Mandarin. Now we are learning about dates and zodiac animals. We also practise Chinese character recognition and character writing following proper stroke orders.
Year 5: After learning the text of “汽车的故事“,We have started the unit of 故事。 Besides learning the texts, students will also learn to create their own 故事。 They will also have chances 讲故事 in class.
Year 6: We have been practising on the topics of “Home (rooms, furniture and neighbouring places)” and “School (places in school, subjects etc)”. We have learned the texts “谁对谁错” . We also practise Chinese character recognition as well as composition writing.
Getting organised for Mandarin lessons
If your child has been given a Mandarin folder (including textbooks, activity books and exercise books), she/he needs to bring it to every Mandarin lesson.
Home Learning
- Home Learning is usually given out in the first lesson of the week and due a week later.
- Some classes will have weekly written tasks while other classes may be given oral practice only.
- The amount of home learning varies from class to class. It usually includes reading aloud, copying Chinese characters, writing sentences, reading storybooks, writing book reports, preparing for dictations etc.
- Please let your teacher know if you have trouble completing your home learning on time.

The replacement costs for books lost are as follows:
- Chinese Made Easy textbook $250 each
- Chinese Made Easy activity book $150 each
- 小学华文 $100 each
- 中文 $100 each
- Other Chinese books $ 75 each
- Mandarin folders $25 each
