Learning Technology Monthly Update #7

Students in Y4 + Y5 Robotics Club made these telepresence robots this week. They wanted to share them with you:

Students in Year 1 have been continuing with their learning with the laptops. They also took a session to learn how to use the Book Creator app on iPad to help with some recording for their current unit of inquiry.

In these last two weeks before the Easter break the students will be using the computers to code and control objects on the screen. This will include some simple programming using tools including J2e. After the Easter break students will be exploring Augmented reality using a variety of apps on iPad.

Year 2 students have spent quite a while focussed on using the laptops and logging in to their Google accounts. We will be moving on to look at some coding tools on the computers. We will mostly focus on Scratch.mit.edu with the students getting an understanding of how objects are given instructions in a program and how they can interact with each other. Students will be given a Scratch account to save their projects after the Easter Break.

Students in Year 3 are learning to use sound recording and music composition tools. Over the past two weeks, they have investigated sound using Chrome Music Lab and then looked at sequencing using Soundtrap.com. Students will be learning how to compose short audio tracks that they can then download for use within other projects such as videos.

Year 4 have been completing a short project using 3D CAD and 3D printing to build objects from 3D shapes. They have created tiny buildings that will be printed and combined to make an art piece.

Following this, students in Year 4 will be learning about video editing using their Chromebooks and WeVideo after the Easter break.

As part of their Energy unit students in Year 5 are currently investigating circuits using the Makey Makey device. You can see some of the challenges 5F completed in this video below:

After the Easter Break Year 5 will be exploring different ways to generate electricity from renewable sources of energy. We will be building our own small generators to charge a battery that will be used within an electricity based creation in the classroom.

Year 6 have been doing some amazing things using the BBC Micro:bit devices recently, here are some examples below:

As we start to move into the Year 6 PYP exhibition we will be focusing on different presentation tools available for the students to use when sharing their learning. In addition to that, some groups will be having extra sessions and mentoring if they are working on something that would benefit from the use of technology.

Before the Easter Break though, students in Year 6 are carrying out some whole class making projects. 6D and 6Y are building a robotics golf course and 6H are helping to create a wind table. Each class will get to explore the creations of the other classes.
