Dear Parents,
It is great to be back at school after the Chinese New Year holiday. I hope you were able to spend time with your family during the holiday period. The children are back to work with energy and enthusiasm and we are straight into exciting activities with our Book Week this week. In fact we have just finished today with a special Book Week assembly where the winners of the competitions were announced and everyone got to parade in their wonderful book character costumes. There wasn’t time for our students versus teachers quiz so we will do this in Monday’s Golden Book assembly. There never seems to be a ‘normal’ week at BHS which can be challenging but is part of what makes BHS such an exciting and special place to be!
Our ‘new’ website was launched yesterday and in two to three weeks time there will be an accompanying App (available for iOS and Android) which means you will have access to the information you really need, including the option for ‘Notifications’ via your smartphone if you wish – through both of these we aim to improve our communications with you in the future. Mr Pheasant will send some guides about the website and App in the near future. In the mean time please do have a ‘wander’ through the new website and pass on your comments or suggestions.
Staffing Update
As you will know Mr Chad Pheasant was successful in being appointed as Vice Principal from August 2015. This is a role he has been doing as an ‘Acting’ position this year. I shall update you with regard to other staffing for the new academic year, next term.
Sports Day
We are organising a new date for our Sports Day after we cancelled it yesterday. This decision was made after a ‘pitch inspection’ yesterday morning. We do our best to get information to you as soon as possible but realise that this may have been a little late for some of you. The overriding factor is for us to ensure the conditions are safe for the children and I know you will support this.
Choral Concert
Our Choir will be a part of this special ESF event on Friday 20th March. Tickets are available through URBTIX. I look forward to seeing many of you there and to enjoying the children’s performance.
International Food Fair
This wonderful event is rapidly approaching (Friday 13th March) and raffle tickets are on sale now. Please support BHS in any way you can and especially through purchasing the raffle tickets and attending the event.
BHS Student Achievements
Our children are often involved with events outside of school and we really love to hear about their efforts and achievements. Recently we have had some children take part in rigorous auditions to play the role of Brigitta in ‘The Sound of Music’. Emily Hellen (Y6) has managed to land herself the role along with a small group of other children. This is an outstanding achievement considering over 600 children auditioned. An ex-BHS student, Jorja Townson also succeeded in landing this role. Well done to both the girls and to the other BHS students who were brave enough to take part in the audition process. It is a good life-lesson to learn that we can’t all be ‘winners’ all the time but it is important to be confident enough to have a go.
We have had more sporting success this week and Ms Wu has a report about this later in the Newsletter. Well done to the entire team who took part in this event – you were great ambassadors for BHS.

RCHK mixed basketball tournament
On the 27th of February, Shenan, Tadashai, Khushaan, Shawn, Emily, Natalie, Jake, Ryo, and Hayley were selected to participate in the RCHK mixed basketball tournament. The team started out strong and won their first game against KJS 8-4, with baskets scored by Shen, Khushaan and Ryo and excellent defense as a team. They lost their second game against RCHK 4-8 but regained their focus for the following 3 games against SJS, Quarry Bay and DC, winning 4-0, 8-6 and 4-2 respectively; securing the team a spot in the semi-finals. During this round, BHS saw a loss of 4-6 against both AISHK and Kennedy and came in 4th place in the tournament. Many thanks to all the parents who came to support BHS on the day. Ryo was named MVP of the tournament for being outstanding offensively and defensively.

DBIS Touch Rugby Tournament
On Thursday 12th February, members of the Beacon Hill Rugby Club participated in the DBIS touch rugby tournament at Kings Park.
Our division 1 boys team played against Harrow International School’s A team and unfortunately lost their first match. After a tough game versus Kellett, resulting in a tie, and an even tougher match against RCHK, we managed to make it into the plate quarter finals against French International School. Each and every team member played their hearts out, but unfortunately we lost 1-0. Honourable mentions go to team captain, Matty Van Weerdenburg and ‘Player of the Tournament’, Tadashi Kawazoe for his excellent defensive skills.
Our girls team started well and only got stronger as the tournament went on. The girls first played against Bradbury School resulting in a tie, followed by some very close matches versus, Discovery Bay International School, ICHK Hong Lok Yuen, and Kellett. The ladies’ hard work earned them a spot in the Trophy Cup. They played against both Kowloon Junior and Sha Tin Junior beating them both and winning the Trophy Cup. Honourable mentions go to team captain, Hayley Yeung and ‘Player of the Tournament’, Shawn Chan for scoring the most tries on the team and Hayley Yeung again for her defensive skills.
Congratulations to all team members for your dedication and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Well done!
