Mandarin Monthly Update #4
1F – Students will learn to name parts of the human body in Mandarin. By the end of this topic, they should be familiar with the following vocabulary in Mandarin: 口,嘴巴,耳朵,鼻子,手,头,头发,脚。
Year 2 – Students in Year Two will develop their vocabulary of basic sight words while creating beautiful art work in watercolour.
Year 3 – Students in Year Three have been learning about radicals in Chinese characters. They will be working in pairs producing mini books of Chinese radicals.
Year 4 – Students in Year Four will be looking at stories of famous people in history – 瓦特,鲁班,and 蔡伦。They will also make connections to their UOI “Where we are in place and time” by learning about Zheng He, the great Chinese explorer in history.
Year 5 – Students in Year Five will focus on narrative texts such as 谁住顶楼,这是怎么一回事,and 故事妈妈。
Year 6 – Students in Year Six will start their next unit “Our school”. At the end of the unit, they should be able to name the different places in our school in Mandarin. They will also be making Mandarin signs for various places in school.
1W has continued to work on the topic Body Parts building on their vocabulary and learning new words. They are practicing how to write these new characters as well as build on their knowledge of fundamental Chinese characters.
Yr2. The students are continuing with the textbook中文 lesson 7. The students are building their reading skills through thorough examination of the stories in the textbook. The students are also singing and learning rhymes and tongue twisters to improve their oral skills.
Yr3. The students have progressed in their learning of pin yin to include tone marks. The next step will be to begin Chinese Made Easy and begin more writing and reading.
Yr4. The students have begun reading the passages in their textbook. Topics include key words that are related to growing up. They have been copying the text and key words while also learning how to form sentences.
Yr5 The students have moved onto the next topic Body Parts. Students are learning key words to describe themselves and their classmates. They are learning this topic through skits and role plays as well as forming sentences to describe their classmates.
Yr6. The students are moving through the textbook very well, learning new key words and how to form more creative sentences. They are building their writing skills as well by writing long free form pieces in class to challenge their memory and creativity.
1L: We are learning about animals in Mandarin. Students should be able to recognise the characters of: 狗,猫,兔 etc. They also practise strokes of Chinese writing.
Year 2: We have been learning about sports and weather in Mandarin. The children should be able to say a rhyme about sports activities and sing a weather song in Mandarin. They also practise Chinese character recognition as well as strokes of Chinese writing.
Year 3: We have learned the texts: “买东西” , “加横歌“ . We have added a “加竖歌”. Students will also have a chance to practise more oral Mandarin in a ” 猜谜语” activity in class.
Year 4: We are learning about zoo animals. Students will be able to carry out a conversation: “going to a zoo” in Mandarin. We also practise Chinese character recognition and character writing following proper stroke orders.
Year 5: We have learned the texts of “狼和小羊“,“聪明的小羊”,and “狐狸和葡萄”. Students will continue practise their story writing skill with “续写故事“.
Year 6: We have been practising on the topics of “seasons”, “weather” and “clothes”. We also practise reading comprehension as well as composition writing.
Getting organised for Mandarin lessons
If your child has been given a Mandarin folder (including textbooks, activity books and exercise books), she/he needs to bring it to every Mandarin lesson.
Home Learning
- Home Learning is usually given out in the first lesson of the week and due a week later.
- Some classes will have weekly written tasks while other classes may be given oral practice only.
- The amount of home learning varies from class to class. It usually includes reading aloud, copying Chinese characters, writing sentences, reading storybooks, writing book reports, preparing for dictations etc.
- Please let your teacher know if you have trouble completing your home learning on time.

The replacement costs for books lost are as follows:
- Chinese Made Easy textbook $250 each
- Chinese Made Easy activity book $150 each
- 小学华文 $100 each
- 中文 $100 each
- Other Chinese books $ 75 each
- Mandarin folders $25 each
