Some of us were lucky to be able to meet up again with our Year 1 buddies. We have noticed how much they are gaining confidence and are able to talk about themselves in more detail.
Year 5 have been inquiring into the different parts of the brain and their functions. We have come across new vocabulary which at times have felt like tongue twisters. Have a go at pronouncing them correctly yourself then impress friends with your new knowledge over dinner!!
We have begun to discuss times when the more negative emotions can take over and cause the brain to “flip its lid”. We are recognising that there are things we can do to “unslump” ourselves.
The children have begun journaling their own experiences; identifying how they have felt throughout the school day and what caused these emotions to occur. Helping them to become more aware of their emotions is an important step to seeking balance and control.
Transdisciplinary Theme: Who We Are
Central Idea
We can understand and develop our emotional well being to lead a balanced life.
Lines of Inquiry
- Ways to apply mindful behaviours (connection)
- Developing and maintaining positive relationships (connection)
- Managing and understanding our emotional wellbeing (form, function)
In the coming week we will work together to examine different scenarios that may cause troublesome emotions if not dealt with in the right way. Ways of dealing with them will be discussed and solutions explored. Children will begin to build up a bank of strategies they could easily apply to their own lives. We will extend our thinking to include how our choices and interactions affect those around us.
We are also going to explore the popular saying “#ragequit” and trying to come up with our own more positive alternatives.
The students are well on their way to understanding the different features of narratives. They have been peer conferencing, examining their own reading books and learning to write direct speech.
We have been looking into ways of expanding the little moments as a way to add more details and engage our readers. Next week we will continue to work on adding detail, using descriptive language and expanding initial ideas.
Congratulations to our 3 Golden Book Winners this week.

We will be sending some number revision activities home this coming Monday.
We hope that this will help keep the concepts fresh and help the children feel confident in the summative tasks set for the end of the week.
Children need to be bringing their own hats to school each day. They are not permitted to play in uncovered areas at break times if they do not wear a hat. Please make sure they are clearly named.
A reminder that no nuts are allowed for snacks, and that whenever possible snacks are healthy and nutritious.
