Year 1 Update – Wk 33

Friday 13th May – Year 1 Sharing Morning
Tuesday 17th May – Year 1 Bake Sale
Next Friday is our Sharing Day in Year One. A letter went out this week outlining the day. The activities should be done around 11:30 am after a short reflection. Children will have a quick play on the playground so that parents may exit the school more easily.

How We Express Ourselves

Central Idea: People Can Share Stories In Different Ways To Communicate

The children have all been busy getting ready for our sharing day next week. Each class has been working hard to complete lots of activities related to how to share stories. We have talked a lot about how to describe characters and settings and thought about there always being a dilemma that needs a solution in all good stories. We have looked at the different ways stories can be told and shared and used lots of different art forms to show this. We don’t want to give too much away but we hope you will enjoy seeing all the different things we have been up to next Friday.

Central Idea: Fractions are a way of representing part of a whole

This will be our last week focusing on fractions. The children have enjoyed splitting up shapes and sharing pieces between 2 and 4 people. Maybe when you are preparing food you could look to see how you could share different foods such as a cake or pizza. Also look at sharing a number of something. This could be toys between two children or pieces of fruit. Does everyone have the same? Is it fair?

As well as very valuable reading and writing lessons we have had a strong focus on speaking and listening during this unit. To be able to write a story, children need to have well developed skills that enable them to verbalise what it is they want to say as well. It is also important that when they work with others they are able to communicate their own ideas effectively and collaboratively put together a story, as well as telling stories on their own.
Many children have said that although they hear stories at home on a regular basis, they rarely make up stories on their own or with others. Both hearing and telling stories are very important. At home, try making up stories together. This is a great way for children to use their imagination, be confident in sharing their ideas and verbalise problem solving. Discussing what would be the best next course of action or how the story develops, helps children start to plan ahead and recognise consequences. Talk together and take turns, make sure that your child gives ideas but does not dominate the conversation.

Phonics

We will continue with our Unit 6 phonemes. Please help us at home by playing the games on the Unit 6 Phonic Bookmark.

Also, thank you for the extra effort that went into the costume preparation today! The children brought in some very creative costumes today and we were very impressed!
We look forward to seeing you next week and sharing all the dance, music, drama and artwork that the children have been doing.
