Island School Art Exhibition – On Thursday half of us volunteered to go along to Island School to see their Art Exhibition – it was a fantastic experience and we viewed some amazing pieces of art work at Secondary level and it was great for us to see some ex-BHS students’ compositions also.  Well done to all the children who enthusiastically volunteered to go along to this it really shows your commitment to your learning and we hope you got some great ideas for how you might present your own work for our upcoming PYPX.  Great action already!

Sweatshop Provocation – On Tuesday we introduced our human rights unit of inquiry by setting up our own BHS Year 6 Sweatshop.  The children were broken up into groups and helped to construct paper bags from newspapers in an effort to highlight the issues connected to child labour.  If you were slightly concerned with this thought provoking provocation please be assured that the actually bag making experience went for no longer than 20 mins and it was an exercise in demonstrating to the children what their life might be like if they were not so privileged and their human rights were not denied….as with so many children around the world.  None of their human rights were actually infringed upon.  After their bag making experience we held a lengthy wrap-up session discussing this provocation  – we discussed what it was like for them, their experiences, their thoughts and feelings, what rights were bordering of being denied and worked on a personal reflection of this experience.  We do hope that this provocation sparked some interest in our PYPX issues.

This week as well as our sweatshop we have been continuing to get our journal ready…all our PYPX  work will go into this journal and they are looking fantastic. We finalized our choices for what issue we will inquiry into and found out our groups.  Our mentors also signed up to the groups and are looking forward to meeting the teams on Monday morning. We are very grateful for all these extra teachers at BHS for giving up their own time to assist the Year 6s for the PYPX.  Well done to all those children who got their ‘Getting Ready for Week 1’ homework assignment back to school and in their journals on time.

Ms Jeves’ Info Lit Workshops – Ms Jeves has been in to all classes this week to run workshops on a variety on Information Literacy topics.  We have looked into the Dewey Decimal System, finding specific information from a non-fiction book and how to check the validity and authentic of a website.  Why not get your child to show you the Christopher Columbus site we checked out…..can you see any problems?  We look forward to continuing these workshops over the coming weeks and will go ahead and use these skills when doing our finding out stage of our personal and collaborative inquiries for the PYPX.

Central IdeaPatterns can be represented, analysed and generalized using algebraic expressions, equations or functions.

Strand Maths – Data Handling

Central IdeaRange, mode, median and mean can be used to analyse statistical data. THEN Probability can be represented on a scale between 0-100% and can be predicted theoretically.

Some classes in Year 6 have began to plan and create autobiographies. These autobiographies will be worked on throughout the coming exhibition and during the production. As the exhibition is so cross curricular, English is continually being worked on throughout the research, reflections and presentations that the children are constantly working on.

Please continue to keep your spelling journals in school unless your class teacher tells you otherwise.

UOI : start to work on your Exhibition topic.  Each class teacher will give more specific instructions about what you might need to begin on eg. writing questions for your lines of inquiry and matching them to concepts, finding websites that are useful to your issue, finding organizations that might help you in finding out more and really researching what they do, designing you group logo for your PYPX t-shirts, working on a shared first brainstorm with your group members so you can all see each others ideas and have your say, think about who and what you might survey for some more finding out….but please don’t email any surveys out!, think about your agenda for Monday’s meeting with your mentor during Golden Book Assembly.

ALL CLASSES….please complete 3 (in a row) activities from the Tuning-in worksheet. Due in by next Thursday 24th March.

DON’T FORGET!!! Can all the children continue to learn the words to Brave and Hall of Fame? If any children are playing instruments please keep up the rehearsing at home.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

6F are continuing their spelling investigations in their Spelling Journal this week you need to complete any that you have not done from previous weeks and this week the pages are p.37 Verb Voice and p. 39 Plural Verbs….please return to school by each Friday.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.
