Year 5 Update Wk 10
Upcoming Dates:
Tuesday, 3rd November – Year 5 Maths Workshop for Parents 7:30pm
Wednesday, 4th November – final day to send Box Of Hope to school.
Friday, 6th November – Diwali Assembly (dress casual in bright colours)
PE with Mr Teahan remains the same this week, however dance will be on Thursday, just for next week. Please wear your PE kit on the 5th of November.
Beginning November 2nd, the children should be bringing in snacks to share at camp. They will be collated and will be given out during camp as snack for the evenings and afternoons. Large packs of individual snacks are ideal i.e. oreo or cookie packs, seaweed, crackers, crisps. Please, no NUTS or CANDY! Each child should be bringing in approximately 6 snacks each.
This week the students began their rotations for art, drama and music. They looked at thought tracking and freeze frames in preparation for their own migration still images in drama. The children have also added to their dance routine and looked into a variation of migration stories.
This week was our final swimming lesson and the children enjoyed games and races to finish off the sessions. Well done with the progress made.
Next week will mark week 2 of our UOI rotations in preparation for our sharing day. The children will continue working on their personal inquiries and digging deeper into the unit through research, reading and case studies. We will explore different thinking cultures through circle of viewpoint activities in order to help the students to gain a better understanding of different people’s perspectives.
Strand Math:
Next week, the student will be continuing their investigations into the connection between area and perimeter. In the upcoming weeks, we will be finding and applying rules for calculating the area and perimeter of regular and irregular polygons.
Number Math:
Our flexible number groups will continue their differentiated work from the previous weeks focusing on addition and subtraction problems.
As the students continue to learn about the different figurative language features, they will begin to apply these skills to their own poems and diary entries. Some of the poetic devices we’ve been looking at are, similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration and onomatopoeia.
As the children get further into their UOI investigations, we will begin writing diary entries from the perspective of different migrants throughout history.

As your children are now in the upper school, they are expected to be completing 30-45 minutes of homework each night. This will be made up of: approx 15-20 minutes reading with an adult, 10-15 spelling work, and their weekly assigned task.
