We would still like you to bear the following in mind……Stationery – Can you please help your child collect all the stationery that they need for the year and ask them regularly when they need replenishing? It makes it very difficult for your child when they can’t lay their hands on the things they need quickly.
Healthy Snacks – Can you please try and encourage your child and your helper to pack a healthy snack for school? We would really love to see a reduction in boxes of sweets brought in for snack, bags of crisps for lunch and big packets of biscuits that are shared among groups of friends. We do need to be careful about children sharing food due to allergies and medical alerts, so the children will be asked not to share food at school.
Deodorant – as the warmer weather is still upon us can we give a gentle reminder about each child wearing and re-applying deodorant at school. The classrooms get very smelly after the children being out in the playground during breaks and PE times.
All the teachers and EAs really appreciate your help and support in these matters.
Thanks again.

For the last 2 weeks we have been continuing our Art lessons with Ms Yu. We have been working on our basic drawing and shading skills and have spend double sessions practicing and refining. We will do our third and final double art skills rotations over the coming weeks.
This week we also begun some of our practical measuring rotations…groups of 10-15 have been working with our EAs on some practical measuring task cards to practice our skills. If you or your helper has time – let them help out with the cooking at home! This will definitely help them practice what they have revised at school.
Big congratulations to the following students for receiving this week’s Golden Book awards :
- 6F – Yoanna Cheung and Brandon Lee
- 6L – Michelle Tam
- 6H – Jamie Ngai
- ICT – Fidel Lau
- SLT – Jake Douglas
This week we finalized our Student Council Representatives for this school year. Congratulations to Luke Hoang in 6F, Jessica Zhou in 6L and Kristy Poon in 6H for earning their place on our Student Council for 2015-16.
On Thursday we all had our final trip to LEAP and this year we learned about the effects of alcohol and also we discussed bullying. The children all got themselves involved in the role-plays and interactive games. I am sure they will miss visiting this centre when they head off to secondary school and also Harold too!
Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 1
Transdisciplinary Theme : Sharing the Planet
Central Idea : People’s responses to conflict may impact the quality of human life.
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- causes of conflict
- conflict resolution and management
- consequences of resolution
Concepts : causation, perspective, responsibility
Learner Profile : principled, open-minded, communicator
Attitudes : co-operation, tolerance, empathy
This week we have continued on with our unit…..training to become conflict monitors, learning some different strategies to resolve conflict and we were introduced to our Summative Task. If you’re really keen you can continue working on your task at home….they will be printed up at school and make into a Playground Monitor Handbook. Each child over the coming weeks will have the opportunity to become a playground monitor for at least a week to try out their skills with the younger children in the playground. We wish them all good luck!
Number Maths – Place Value
Central Idea : The base 10 place value system extends infinitely in two directions
The children have been reading and writing large numbers as well as working with negative numbers.
Strand Maths – Measurement
Central Idea : Conversion of units and measurements allows us to make sense of the world we live in.
Our Number lessons continued this week but we only had a chance to do two of them due to LEAP and Swimming. Most of the children’s Number homework came in on Tuesday – but some was missing. Can you please remind your child to bring back their completed homework by each Tuesday? They can even drop it into their Number teacher’s classroom before the due date!
We’ve all been carrying on with our Measurement activities in our Strand classes and all the children have enjoyed working on the practical measuring tasks as mentioned earlier. If your child did not get their turn at this…..bear with us, it takes a lot of organising and they should have a go next week.
We have continued on with our Exposition genre this week in our English lessons. We have continued deconstructing and looking at examples of good exposition to inspire our own writing. We have also been planning our own writing using graphic organizers and will be drafting some of our own next week if we have not done so already.
Spelling Journals went home for the first round of spelling testing this week – can we just remind everyone that the Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday as we will tackle some of those spelling investigations in the back during the week at school! All journals must be in on Friday’s for our buddy tests with the 3 home tests completed and ticked off. We will remind all the children of this procedure this week as we know it is a little different from what they did last year.
Spelling : Spelling Journal investigations and spelling homework will begin on Monday.
Reading : Weekly reflections are to be completed once a week. They need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.
Number Maths : please all continue with your Mathletics tasks…..some tasks will be set by your class teacher and some tasks will be set by your number teacher.
- Mr Hoskins – Complete Up and Down worksheet. Play the on-line negative numbers game – http://www.mathsisfun.com/ordering_decimals.html
- Miss Fearn – ‘Roller Coaster’ and ‘Time Travel’ game…play these at home with someone and don’t forget to do your ‘Now Try This!’ activities on a separate piece of paper.
- Miss Fisher – Complete the activities set in the Number Maths section of your Mathletics accounts (6FHL)
- Mrs Davis – Ordering decimals and comparing decimals worksheets
UOI : please continue on your ‘Collaborative Conflict Journal’ at home on Google Docs……don’t let your team down!
Thought of the Week : Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. (Henry Ford)
