Cross Phase Transfer Day : 3rd June, 2016
Your child should have brought home some information about Friday 3rd June when all children going to ESF secondary schools will visit their respective schools and spend the day finding out more about what life will be like for them when they start in August.
You should have already received a letter from the secondary school with more information and you will more than likely be informed of your child’s ‘house’ and the children will possibly need to go along dressed in their new house colours.
Island School children will be bused up from Hong Kong station to Island School that day but will need to meet their parents at Island School at 2:30pm to attend a parent and student welcome information session. BHS will not be providing transport home from Island School on this day.
KGV School children will come to BHS as usual and will be bused to KGV (leaving at 9:45) with Mr Hoskins and Mr Pheasant. They will return to BHS in time for the school buses at the end of the day.
Sha Tin College children should arrive at Sha Tin College by 8:45am and will depart at 2:40pm. Parents are expected to make their own arrangements for getting children to and from STC. BHS will not be providing transport on this day. However, Miss Fisher will be there to meet the students at the entrance at 8:45am.
Please check the letters that have been sent home regarding lunch arrangements, what to wear, what to bring etc.
If your child is not attending an ESF Secondary School there is no school for them here at BHS on that day.
End of Year 6 Graduation – More details will be sent to you in the next few weeks but in the meantime, please give some thought to what your child will wear. It is an important event in the children’s school life and therefore we expect them to be dressed in smart/special event clothing for the ceremony. The dress code for the past few years has been…..
- suits for boys (or at the very least a dress shirt and trousers and tie), or traditional dress, dress shoes
- semi-formal party dresses for girls (or a pant-suit), or traditional dress, dress shoes
- no denim or shorts or flip flops
I have found some examples on the internet……….so you get what we mean.
Year 6 Production
Since our auditions last week, we have made some amazing progress on the Year 6 production, ‘Once on This Island’. We are very lucky to have the highly experienced Mrs Judge taking on the role of Director this year. Rehearsals began in earnest on Monday and we have been amazed and impressed by the standard already shown. All the students have been learning the lyrics and their lines well. They have also shown great maturity and good listening skills when responding to stage directions, musical cues and critical feedback.
If you think you may be able to help out eg. dance, drama workshops, make-up and hair on the evening, costume sourcing, costume ironing etc please give your class teacher a shout.
All of the children have a valuable part to play in the production. However, only a few can be chosen for the main roles. They are …

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 6
Transdisciplinary Theme : How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea : Many elements combine to make a theatrical performance.
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- The roles and responsibilities involved in a theatrical performance.
- The process of planning a performance
- Ways of connecting elements of a performance
Concepts : Function, Responsibility, Connection
Learner Profile : Courageous, Communicator, Reflective
Attitudes : Commitment, Confidence, Independence
The children have been introduced to Learning Contracts for this Unit of Inquiry. Each child has made a choice about how best they want to show their understanding of the three lines of inquiry above. This is a chance for them to develop independence as they complete the contract by themselves.
As you can see the students have also been gaining lots of first hand experience of the Central Idea!
The teachers have been working hard too!
Central Idea – Geometric tools and methods can be used to solve problems relating to shape and space.
Number Maths – Computation
Central Idea – Strategies for whole number computation can apply to fractional and decimal computation.
Throughout this production unit of inquiry we will be working on these above Maths concepts and also on consolidating work some throughout this year.
We have been thinking about and planning for our Autobiographies. The children are imagining themselves grown old, looking back on their lives and all their experiences. They will then write about these as if they had happened. It is very interesting to hear what the children think they will do, what they will become and how they will live. Please do take the opportunity to ask them about this too. You might be surprised!
More transdisciplinary English learning as we continue looking at the ‘Once on this Island’ play scripts in more detail. Some students have begun writing their own scripts or re-writing parts of ‘Once on this Island’ too. Meanwhile, others have been writing diary entries as if they were someone working in the theatre or in film.
Spelling : specific investigation tasks set by your teacher.
Reading : Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.
UOI – Please make sure you can now memorise large parts, if not all of the ‘Once on this Island’ play script.
– Also, please remember to submit a design for the ‘Once on this Island’ programme cover to your teacher as soon as possible if you would like the chance of your design being chosen! Miss Fearn has nice drawing paper if you would like to use that, but you can submit your entry in using any medium. No larger than A3 though, please!
Number Maths :
- All Number Maths Groups : Mathletics.
