Tuesday 13th October – Camp information evening at 7:00pm

Please note that the Year 6 Camp Information Evening is Tuesday 13th October. The power point showed to you on Meet the Parent night had the correct date but the wrong day so please amend this in your diaries if you have not already done so.

A reminder that our swimming lessons begins next Wednesday 9th September (for four weeks). Can you please ensure that the children do have all the necessary items ready for their lessons….. suitable swimming suit, goggles, swimming cap, towel, flip flops, deodorant and please ensure these are all inside a swimming bag.  A $5 coin is also needed for the lockers each week.  If your child is unable to swim for a lesson please let the teacher know by email the morning of the lesson or earlier.

We would still like you to bear the following in mind……

Stationery – Can you please help your child collect all the stationery that they need for the year and ask them regularly when they need replenishing?  It makes it very difficult for your child when they can’t lay their hands on the things they need quickly.

Healthy Snacks – Can you please try and encourage your child and your helper to pack a healthy snack for school?  We would really love to see a reduction in boxes of sweets brought in for snack, bags of crisps for lunch and big packets of biscuits that are shared among groups of friends. We do need to be careful about children sharing food due to allergies and medical alerts, so the children will be asked not to share food at school.

Deodorant – as the warmer weather is still upon us can we give a gentle reminder about each child wearing and re-applying deodorant at school.  The classrooms get very smelly after the children being out in the playground during breaks and PE times.

All the teachers and EAs really appreciate your help and support in these matters.

Thanks again.

SECONDARY SCHOOL APPLICATIONS FOR OUR YEAR 6 CHILDREN

If you wish for your child(ren) to attend an ESF secondary school you will need to complete the secondary transfer application procedure on Gateway. This can onlybe accessed from Monday, 7th September until Friday, 18th September.

When you login to Gateway select Change Request from the Admin menu followed by Transfer Application for Year 7.  You will see an online form with your residential address and data for your child. If you have any changes please update the information as necessary. If your address has changed you will also need to upload your proof of address document. Please then click on the Submit Request button to confirm a Year 7 place is required.

A letter confirming the Year 7 place will be posted directly by the secondary schools on 1st December 2015.

Another enjoyable week in Year 6, including the handing over of monitor badges. It’s good to see the Year 6 children stepping up and setting a great example.

At the beginning of the week a number of Year 6 pupils were given the responsibility of being bus monitors and school monitors. Mr Pheasant called the year group to the main hall and handed out the badges to a selection of children from the year group. This is a big responsibility and really aids the staff at Beacon Hill in making the day run as smoothly as possible. The monitors are to wear their badges to school every day.

We are really getting into our UOI and have been thinking about conflict and quality of life in different contexts. The children have enjoyed taking part in debates and spending time pondering what life is like from the perspective of people in different countries. Some children have brought in newspaper articles on conflict and we have discussed them in class.

Big congratulations to the following students for receiving this week’s Golden Book awards: Nicole Yuen (6F), Kenton To (6H) and Jordan Mendes (6L) Ellie Chung received an SLT certificate following on from last weeks PE award and Venisha Goyani received the certificate from Mandarin class.  Keep it up Year 6!

Next week we have lots going on in year 6 and across the school…

Tuesday 8th September – Introduction to the PYP : new parent information session 6:30pm

Wednesday 9th September – Year 6 Swimming

Thursday 10th September – Year 6 Trip to LEAP

Friday 11th September – PTA Bowling

Please make a note of these important dates.

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 1

Transdisciplinary Theme : Sharing the Planet

Central Idea : People’s responses to conflict may impact the quality of human life.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • causes of conflict
  • conflict resolution and management
  • consequences of resolution

Concepts : causation, perspective, responsibility

Learner Profile : principled, open-minded, communicator

Attitudes : co-operation, tolerance, empathy

Number Maths – Place Value

Central Idea : The base 10 place value system extends infinitely in two directions

The children have been reading and writing large numbers as well as working with negative numbers.

Strand Maths – Measurement

Central Idea : Conversion of units and measurements allows us to make sense of the world we live in.

Year 6 are continuing to measure various objects and places as well as solving puzzles by converting the recordings into different units.

IMPORTANT REMINDER – Can Miss Fearn’s class please bring in their geometry sets on Monday?  We will be needing them throughout the week…….especially the protractors! If you don’t have one yet you can purchase one from the PTA office.  Thanks so much.  Miss F :)

Year 6 have continued to de-construct exposition texts by highlighting the main features to aid them when they come to write their own. They have also been looking at a range of statements and making a judgement on whether the writer’s perspective is for, against or balanced.

The library lessons are continuing to entertain the children. Just another reminder that we do encourage pupils to borrow a range of fiction and non-fiction books in order to become balanced readers.

Reading assessments are still on going with the aim to be completed by the end of this month. All children are aware that they have to read every night, please work with them to keep a record of this and update the reading diary task once a week.

Spelling journals will be handed out on Monday once all the children have identified the words they need to work on.

Spelling : Spelling Journal investigations and spelling homework will begin on Monday.

Reading : Weekly reflections are to be completed once a week. They need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths : Number Maths homework is to continue the ‘Are You Ready?’ tasks sets on Mathletics and any Live Mathletics activities.  Their Mathletics passwords will remain the same as last year.

  • Mr Hoskins – Complete A and B of the negative numbers task called, ”Up and Down.”
  • Miss Fearn – positive and negative work pages…don’t forget to do your ‘Now Try This!’ activities
  • Miss Fisher – partitioning and place value work on Mathletics
  • Mrs Davis – partitioning and place value work on Mathletics

UOI : A small number of children managed to bring in newspaper articles but we would like a big push to ensure every child brings in a conflict story from the newspaper, online or from watching the news on television. As before they can bring in news in their mother-tongue language, such as Chinese. Discussing these stories with your child will also help to assist their understanding of the different perspectives involved.Articles need to be collected in order for the next UOI homework to be successful.
