KELY Support Group – On Monday we had an ex-BHS student Elaine, in from the KELY Support Group to talk to us about bullying as we continue our series of guest speakers and trips to help us to get inspiration and ideas for our upcoming Exhibition.  We learned some really interesting information about bullying, the different types and the roles of the people involved.  Some of the children really seem interested in this topic and they do seem like they would like to investigate it further for the Exhibition.

Central Idea : We face many changes as we go through life

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • the nature of self
  • beliefs and values
  • personal, physical, mental and spiritual health 43315b5bf2f4c7e7a691269dea0cd1be
  • human relationships including friends, families, communities and cultures
  • rights and responsibilities
  • what it means to be human

Concepts : form, change, causation

Learner Profile : balanced, reflective

Attitudes : confidence, empathy, respect

Central IdeaPatterns can be represented, analysed and generalized using algebraic expressions, equations or functions.

We’ve all been getting on with our Pattern and Function work in our Number Maths groups…..we have had a very busy time with trips and guest speakers this week and will be continuing to be busy so we will just continue with this maths UOI when we can.  Different patterns and rules, functions and rules, pattern investigations and rich tasks and working with algebra will all be topics that we will work on over the next few weeks.

Strand Maths – Data Handling

Central IdeaRange, mode, median and mean can be used to analyse statistical data. THEN Probability can be represented on a scale between 0-100% and can be predicted theoretically

Our new Unit of Inquiry in English is autobiographies. In this unit the children will get to focus on their first person writing skills and ultimately produce their very own autobiographies. This week we continued to introduce the new success criteria and have talked about the ways in which we can learn about what makes a successful autobiography.  In the coming weeks we will be excited to learn about the lives of other people and to use various pieces of writing to enable us to produce our own writing.

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays.  Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

UOI : THIS WEEK – Using your info that your collected last week during you interview you need to put it all on a timeline on Lucid Chart.  You can access Lucid Chart via The Beacon and make sure you save your work so you can access it here at school when needed. This needs to be completed by 11th March, 2016.

LAST WEEK (for those of us that have not started!) – As our new unit is all about changes we would like the children to interview a family member of their choice in order to find out how lives are impacted by change. The children can record this work on paper or using a Google Doc or Google Drawing. They can take notes and/or prepare a graphic organiser to show what they have learned. We will be using this info for a follow up homework task next week…so please make sure you take the time to get this one done this week.

DON’T FORGET!!! Can all the children continue to learn the words to Brave and Hall of Fame? If any children are playing instruments please keep up the rehearsing at home.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • Miss Fearn -please continue with your Mathleitcs and also FDP revision work on ‘Soiled Goods’ and problem solving using logical reasoning.
  • Miss Fisher – Patterns and Function sheet and, of course, your Mathletics!
  • Mr Hoskins – please can you hand in your homework from last week as some are still outstanding and stay up to date with your Mathletics.
  • Mrs Davis – Patterns and Functions sheet- and the Age of Aunt Lil! Extension – Can you make up your own word problem like this?

Thought of the Week : You have only failed it if you have given up. #growthmindset
