Please note that there will be no weekly update next week.  We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Year of the Monkey.

Each year we have a parent information session giving out information about our upcoming PYP Exhibition.  As you know this is a very important event in the Year 6 diary and it really does help the children if you are fully aware of what is going on and the expectations of the children and on you as a parent…so you know where you can support your child.  Last year we introduced a parent and child information session where the children were able to sit with you and listen and talk about the information given by the teachers in Year 6, Mr Pheasant, Ms Dewhurst and Mr Harrison – and this worked really well.  So, can you please pencil it in your diaries and we will see you then!
Chinese New Year Donations – please send in any donations of lai-see packets, chocolate coins and tea (loose leaf) to Ms Lynn in the Mandarin Department.
GLUE! GLUE! GLUE! – Our Exhibition Journals arrived on Monday so we have begin preparing them for our upcoming PYP Exhibition. To do that all the children need to have a good supply of glue sticks.  Can you please be sure to purchase a few more sticks for your child as we will be using lots and lots over the next couple of weeks?
Year 1 Photos – As a treat for the children at the end of the year we will be doing something special with your child’s Year 1 photograph.  If your child was not at BHS in Year 1 can you to please email us their Year 1 school photograph.  We prefer to use the school photograph but if this is not available we can use a personal photo of them (preferably in school uniform) from Year 1. A scan of a photograph is fine but a photo of a photo will just not work – you can always send us in the original and will can scan it here and send it back to you.  Please send in in to Miss Kannis, her email address is…. kannis.tsui@bhs.edu.hk.

Has anyone else gotten their days mixed up this week? The school closure on Monday took us all by surprise. (We hope you’ve all warmed up by now!) Despite the cold, the students came back on Tuesday ready to get stuck into the week ahead. We were really impressed to see that many of the children had spent their day at home learning about “What’s new in science?” or engaging their creativity by planning fun ways to present their learning. To read more about that, and the other learning that’s been taking place this week, scroll down to the relevant section!

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 3

Transdisciplinary Theme : How the World Works

Central Idea : Scientific investigations can help people to make sense of the world.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • what scientific inquiry is
  • how the scientific process is used
  • the application of the scientific process

Concepts : form, function,

Learner Profile : reflective, inquirer

Attitudes : independence, curiosity

As mentioned above and in last week’s Weekly Update, the children have been showing their curiosity and enthusiasm for what’s new in science. Although most of our learning engagements and experiences during this unit have been hands on, practical science experiments, there has also been the opportunity to find out about the latest scientific developments. By the time the children are adults, many of the areas they’ve been looking into might be commonplace, so it’s great that they’re finding out about them now. Currently, the children are working on ways to present their learning in interesting and creative ways. We hope to share these across the year group before the end of this unit.

Central Idea : Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.

Number Maths lessons have continued with focusing on real-world problems and different strategies for calculating percentages and fractions of amounts. As mentioned last week, one such way is to use a calculator so could all children make sure they have theirs in school at all times.

Strand Maths – Shape and Space

Central Idea : Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts to allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.

Our investigations into Shape and Shape and space have included looking at how shapes can be transformed, reduced and enlarged as well as exploring shapes on all four quadrants.

As this unit is drawing to a close, the children have been reflecting on their explanation writing and the similarities and differences between explanations and instructional or persuasive texts. They have also been using their Spelling Journals to focus on grammar areas which correspond well with this genre. This is the reason why Spelling Journals are needed in school every day.

The children have also been using their English skills in their unit of inquiry learning, such as when explaining what they have found out about (either in written text or orally), when viewing videos and websites for research, or when presenting their learning in their chosen format, including videos, computer presentations, quizzes etc.

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays.  Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

UOI : At this stage of the unit, all students should have completed their research into ‘What’s New in Science’. Now is the time to make sure your presentation is fully prepared and add any last minute “sparkle” to make yours really special.  Hopefully, you have already planned your presentation in detail and collected the materials needed (boxes for dioramas or small containers, recycled items or boxes for small models), so now you can focus on creating and finishing off these amazing presentations.

Also all children need to continue to learn their songs for our upcoming PYPX Exhibition.

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • Miss Fearn – Please take some time this week to catch up on our Mathletics Number tasks….you will get to join the special group if you get them all done!!!! 🙂
  • Miss Fisher – Please take some time this week to catch up on our Mathletics Number tasks….you will get to join the special group if you get them all done!!!! 🙂
  • Mr Hoskins – Complete real life ratio problems worksheet and don’t forget to design your own ratio investigation/problem at the end. Please keep up with your mathletics tasks too.

Thought of the Week : Don’t let failure be an ending make it a beginning. #growthmindset
