Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 3
Transdisciplinary Theme : How the World Works
Central Idea : Scientific investigations can help people to make sense of the world.
Lines of Inquiry – We will inquire into…
- what scientific inquiry is
- how the scientific process is used
- the application of the scientific process
Concepts : form, function,
Learner Profile : reflective, inquirer
Attitudes : independence, curiosity
This week Year 6 have continued learning about the scientific process. We have also begun our independent inquiry into a new discovery in science. The children have chosen a new scientific initiative and have begun their own research into it. The have been using their note-taking skills and have been encouraged to keep them brief! This research is continuing at home for homework so if you happen to be passing by when your child is busy on their homework task….please remind them about the importance of brevity of notes to be free from plagiarism. At school we will be presenting these inquires in as many different creative ways as we can….so you may like to make suggestions to you child about an interesting way to show their learning. We are all excited to see their finished product.
Number Maths – Fractions, Decimals and Percentages (FDP)
Central Idea : Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.
We’ve continued on with our FDP in our Number Maths sessions this week. Calculating the percentage ‘of’ and the percentage ‘off’, operations not with a common denominator, converting decimals to percentages and to fractions and extended investigations have all been on the plans for this week. You may be surprised to learn that it is important that the children know how to effectively use a calculator and using a calculator is one of our Year 6 Outcomes for this UOI so please can all children have a calculator at school ready to be used in Number Maths lessons.
Strand Maths – Shape and Space
Central Idea : Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts to allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.
We’ve continued our investigation into circles again this week and have kept moving through our Shape and Space topic. We’ve been impressed at home some of the children have persevered in using their compass in drawing accurate circles. It can be a tricky skill to master but they are coming along nicely. Shape and Space is a topic where we find that even the maths strugglers can do really well. It’s great to be able to give their confidence a boost and show them they can be successful in Maths even though they might find other topics difficult.
Our Explanation writing has continued with students gaining additional note-taking practice to gather information. The pupils in Year 6 have been encouraged to carefully proof read…..making corrections and alterations to improve their work is a very important skill. Some children have even began to use the skills that will be needed for the Year 6 Exhibition by backing/mounting their work and helping to create class displays.
As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.
UOI : Once again please, continue research on your ‘What’s New in Science’ inquiry and start to prepare your presentation. You also need to plan out your presentation in detail…you may want to take your jotter home to do this and do’t forget to collect the materials that your will need….boxes for dioramas or small containers, recycled items or boxes for small models. Also all children need to continue to learn their songs for our upcoming PYPX Exhibition.
Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.
Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.
Number Maths :
- Miss Fearn – ‘Extreme Sports’ percentage calculations (it’s in pounds but you could convert your answers to HKD using a currency converter app 😉 and ‘There’s a Fraction Too Much Friction’ problem solving using the draw a diagram strategy.
- Miss Fisher – ‘Fraction Action’ – converting improper fractions to mixed numbers
- Mr Hoskins – Please complete FDP work sheet and playhttp://pbskids.org/cyberchase/math-games/mission-magnetite/ if you are up to date with mathletics.
- Mrs Davis – Fractions worksheet- addition and subtraction and play the fractions game http://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/fraction-matcher/latest/fraction-matcher_en.html
