Secret Santa – Children have been asked to take part in Secret Santa, no more than $70 per child. If your child won’t be here during the last few days could you please let the class teachers know so they can take their presents before they go off on Christmas break.
Winter Uniforms –  Can you please help your child to check the weather before dressing for school each morning?  Some children are coming in to school dressed up for snowy weather but the temperatures are still getting up to mid twenties. Please also note that black shoes, not trainers, are required, as are white trainers only for the P.E. uniform.
Stationery – Most children are equipped with the stationery they need, however some are missing some essentials. Please make sure that your child has all of the stationery that they need and that items such as glue sticks get replenished. A small hole punch would also make things easier in class.

Island School – On Monday our Island School children went off to their new secondary school for their first visit.  How exciting!  They had a day in the classrooms, participated in some lessons, met some of their future classmates, caught up with past students and worked with some of their future teachers as well.  Most all had to navigate buying their lunch as well.  It was a great day out and Mrs Davis said they all did really well.  KGV day is coming up in January and we will let you  know if Sha Tin College arranges any visits for their students.

Immunizations – This week the Year 6s had their first round of immunizations for the year.  Please be aware that only the eligible children had this on Tuesday which was only a few children. Vaccination cards should have been returned yesterday or if not they should come back today.

Christmas is coming!Students in Year 6 are now continuing to deliver Christmas cards on a daily basis. Our students are taking the task seriously but having fun at the same time by wearing Santa hats or reindeer antlers, they are such good sports!rrk7k7rq-1374798875

Year 6 Unit of Inquiry 3

Transdisciplinary Theme : How the World Works

Central Idea : Scientific investigations can help people to make sense of the world.

Lines of Inquiry  – We will inquire into…

  • what scientific inquiry is
  • how the scientific process is used
  • the application of the scientific process

Concepts : form, function,

Learner Profile : reflective, inquirer

Central Idea : Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.

Number Maths classes were put on hold again this week so we could fit in our science rotations.  Lessons with the number teachers will resume again next week.  We will make a start on the FDP unit and the teachers will have or will be setting appropriate Mathletics tasks for the children to work on.

Strand Maths – Shape and Space

Central Idea : Consolidating what we know of geometric concepts to allow us to make sense of and interact with our world.

All classes continued on with the Strand topics of shape and space.  We’ve been pre-assessing, looking at properties of circles, identifying 2D and 3D shapes and some classes have used their shape knowledge to make 3D Christmas decorations from 2D nets.

NB – A lot of our maths has taken place during science rotations this week, looking at how we can collect, analyse and present data.

Explanation writing will be the focus over the coming weeks. The children have already began deconstructing texts and recapping on what the features are of writing an exciting explanation. With so many awesome science experiments going on in Year 6 there will be plenty of opportunity to construct some great explanation texts.

As always, buddy spelling tests are held every Friday so Spelling Journals are an absolute necessity for Fridays. Spelling Journals need to be back in to school everyday to enable students to work on the spelling investigations in the back of the journal throughout the week and also to add personal spelling words to as they arise during the weekdays.

NO SPELLING AND READING HOMEWORK FOR THE LAST WEEK OF TERM!!!!

Spelling : Spelling Journal homework – 3 practice spelling tests to be conducted under the supervision of an adult at home, daily spelling practice and any additional journal tasks set by the class teacher.

Reading : Weekly reflections to be completed at least once a week. Children need to ensure they are reading at home each night for at least 20 mins and to write one weekly reflection about their reading in their diaries. Parents are not required to write a comment or to sign the book. However, continued interest and involvement in your child’s reading would be appreciated and will assist in their development.

Number Maths :

  • Miss Fearn – Due to Science Rotations please continue with your Mathletics!  I have set you all new tasks…..enjoy 🙂
  • Miss Fisher – Make sure you are up to date with Mathletics
  • Mr Hoskins – Make sure you are up to date with Mathletics
  • Mrs Davis – Make sure you are up to date with Mathletics

Strand Maths : Practice drawing circles using your compass….don’t forget to take home your geometry set.  If you don’t have one to use at school please take some time this weekend to purchase one.
