Year 4 Update Wk 4

  • Sharing Day is approaching, only 1 and a half weeks to go.  Can we ask that all children wear their sports uniform on the sharing day.  Please refer to the letter going home on Monday for starting times and places for each class.  Be prepared, you will need to take your shoes off in the drama room!

 

This week we completed our first Pattern and Function unit with the final assessment on Growing Patterns in Shape.  We pre-assessed the Place Value unit which will continue for the next few weeks.

We had a special guest in, Mrs Sanghvi, who shared her beliefs and values. We learned about making a choice to be happy and how this affects our relationships with others.

We have learnt amazing facts about our body proportions.  This has lead us to use measurement  to assist our sketches of the human face.  Next, will be sketching the full body, which you will be able to see on the Sharing Day.

In this unit the children will be inquiring into theirs and others’ personal beliefs and values. Making connections to themselves and others.  Learning will take place through the arts; music, ICT, drama, dance and visual art, and this will be shared with you at the end of the unit.

Moving on from looking at similarities and differences, students will be investigating different perspectives  they, and others, may hold in the same or different situations. Students will reflect on how these perspectives affect attitudes and behaviours.

A Maths unit on Measurement is connected to this UOI.  We have begun to inquire into Non-standard Units using body proportions which will coincide with art.  Children will look for relationships between parts of the body to support their understanding  of proportion, ratio and measurement.

Place Value

Central Idea (Number)- Base 10 place value systems can be extended to represent any size

Pre-assessment: Concepts within place value

This week we are:

  • Reading numbers up to 99 999
  • Comparing and ordering numbers up to 99 999 positioning them on a number line
  • Writing numbers up to 99 999 using digits and/or words
  • Rounding numbers up to 99 999 to the nearest 10,100,1000.

Area and Perimeter

Central Idea (Measurement) – Standard units allow us to make accurate measurements in order to identify, compare, order and sequence objects

This week we are

  • Estimate, construct, measure and compare perimeter and area using non standard units
  • Estimate, construct, measure and compare perimeter and area using  standard units (mm, cm, m)

Poetry is the text type for our first Unit of Inquiry.  We will focus on these three types of poetry: Kennings, Cinquain and Haiku.  With each of these forms of poetry students will listen to examples, explore how each is written and then experience writing their own examples.

 

This week we will focus on:

  • Spelling – double letter, 2 syllable words
  • Introduce Cinquain
  • Adjectives and verbs
  • Publishing poems ready for sharing day

Remember to give your child a healthy start to the day with breakfast and a nutritious snack to ensure sustained energy levels.

Please remember to sign your child’s home reading journal so that they are able to borrow a new book. A kind reminder that students are expected to read Reading Eggspress twice a week.

We urgently need a large supply of newspapers for a maths/UOI activity.  If you have any around the house please send them in to school.
